Is it a really bad idea to chop the sleeves off a dress made of viscose and a tiny bit of elastane? Will it fray like anything? Only I don't have a sewing machine to hem my raw edge with...

I had been washing my new (and not particularly cheap) bras carefully in the washing-machine, tied inside a pillowcase, at 30 degrees.
