Hello steampunks around the world!
I have some very exciting images to share with you. A few weeks ago a friend sent me
a link about Houston Community College holding a steampunk fashion exhibition. The school's fashion department was the recipient of a huge gift of period costumes from the 18th century to the 1980s, with a lot of Victorian pieces. And fantastically, they decided to use the umbrella of steampunk as a way of displaying some of these pieces in a unique and creative way.
I spread the word about the exhibit among my local steampunk community, and fairly soon we had an invitation from the curators for a special viewing of the collection. So yesterday a sizable gathering of 42 attendees, most dressed in their steampunk finest, were shown around by the curators. It's an incredible exhibit, both from the point of view of simply viewing antique pieces and also as creative expression. For someone who is not active in the steampunk subculture to embrace the aesthetic and pull it off so well is astounding. Between the curators and the steampunks, it was impossible to tell who was more exciting about the gathering.

You can see the rest of my personal photos in
that Picasa album, or peruse
the 150 photos in my friend Cozmo's facebook album.
The exhibit runs until October 31st, and the gallery is open Monday-Friday 11-4, but the director of the department was emphatic that they would be glad to arrange weekday evening hours or another weekend day for anyone else who is interested. There should also be photos from our visit appearing in the Houston Chronicle in the next couple of weeks, as a photographer was present to document.
