huge stormclouds have been blowing in from the coast all day, carried along by buffeting winds that occasionally push torrents of rain ahead of them. perched here on the hilltop, it's a sight both beautiful and frightening; inspiring and humbling. but mostly, there's a feeling of tension, the hesitant hush before the storm lets loose.

• my hip is jacked up thanks to muscle spasms, but it is recovering. i can walk and stand up straight. hot baths help. lying down for eight hours does not.
