    Marking the day that Khmer Rouge trials are finally under way. Comrade Duch will possibly end up as fall guy for the entire regime if his elderly superiors successfully take the Pinochet/Milosevic option, something everyone expects they will at least try for.

    Rwanda: from this to this in fourteen years.

    There are a few books I still wish to read about the Rwandan genocide, including Philip Gourevitch's We wish to inform you that tomorrow we will be killed with our families, plus several films I have yet to see including Hotel Rwanda, Shake Hands with the Devil and Shooting Dogs.     Dith Pran, the Cambodian photojournalist whose life was turned into The Killing Fields, has died aged 65, from pancreatic cancer. Too early.

    The trials of Cambodia's mass murderers begins in July 2008. One of them, Duch (now a born-again Christian) is beginning to publicly reconcile his past. I fully expect the rest will be far more evasive and still in denial.
