I spent the first official day of my spring vacation decompressing: slept in, stayed in my pajamas 'til past noon, and saw a movie. Or, um, two. These movies were Watchmen and the animated, Sita Sings the Blues.

Coraline is a beautiful film. It succeeds visually, humorously, and, well, frighteningly. The characters are complex without being overwrought. The plot is an excellent adventure story with some nice scares ( Read more... )

Harry Potter is pretty cool, all things considered. I like the book series better than the films, but I enjoy watching the movies when they come out.

I saw Batman on Saturday. It was pretty great.

Technically, it was a better paced, more intriguing story than the first of Nolan's Batman films, Batman Begins. It also had larger explosions, which I think counts for something.

The Watchmen trailer is visually delicious. It's a treat to see Dr. Manhattan and the Nite Owl walking around. My earliest and only criticism is that Ozymandias is a little on the weak side; I would have preferred him to be played by someone like Aaron Eckhart who, physically, is almost a perfect match. I'm re-watching Batman Begins on TV. Maybe I didn't notice it during my first viewing, but the wide, sweeping shots of Gotham City are lovely. So I finished the movie, Waitress, today, and it's just the right mix of chick flick and Southern-fried corniness, bittersweet and funny. It never becomes too melodramatic or inappropriately funny, which I really liked. When it comes to special effects, the Wachowski Brothers (creators of The Matrix) were probably the best possible choice to make Speed Racer. It's a pretty film. Despite the fact it's live-action, its unrealistic background, its frequent use of action lines, and the fact most of the main characters know martial arts make it feel more like anime ( Read more... )

There Will Be Blood is one of those really good movies that I sort of only want to see once. Does that still make it a good movie?
