When it comes to special effects, the Wachowski Brothers (creators of The Matrix) were probably the best possible choice to make Speed Racer. It's a pretty film. Despite the fact it's live-action, its unrealistic background, its frequent use of action lines, and the fact most of the main characters know martial arts make it feel more like anime. I can't remember the plot, and I can't remember most of the reasons for the melodrama that took place during the story, but it was nice eye candy non-the-less. John Goodman as Pops Racer and Christina Ricci as Trixie certainly looked their parts. The visuals ran together far more smoothly than anything else. There were lots of colors, racing stripes, and checkered finish lines. Also, during the chimp-filled credits, there was a multi-lingual
cover of the Speed Racer theme song.
I'm not entirely sure I had any coherent thoughts during the cool races in the film, all of which either took place on either Hot Wheels tracks or Mario Kart terrain. The scenes between the races got a little boring after a while, but this wasn't exactly a thinking movie. Consistent swearing and scantily-clad racer models keep it from being a kids movie, too. The fact the target audience may be hard to find will be some trouble for Warner Bros.
It held my attention for a little bit, but I'm also ready for the next summer blockbuster.
