Re the password shenanigans, it turned out that if you reset your password, the system will not let you change it - even if it suddenly decides it doesn't like your shiny new password - for five days. Well, I've finally got back in to the email account I was locked out of, after spamming (without result) various former colleagues with anguished wails last week: I tried resetting my password yesterday and lo and behold, the system accepted it. No, I have no idea why things had changed.
