Okay, so I didn't get the job. I've dealt with it by burying myself in a total immersion Japanese language program. It uses pictures, mostly, to teach you the hiragana, katakana, and kanji...all at the same time. I'm, admittedly very slowly, picking up the hiragana now. It's making things much better for me.
