For the first time, I'm letting a member of my family read a non-fiction short story I wrote in an undergraduate writing class.

My brothers came in yesterday, one from New Jersey, the other Missouri. My one-hour drive looked positively puny. Of course, I got the call in the middle of laundry and bread-baking, but what else are you gonna do? I ditched the laundry and loaded the bread dough into a loaf pan, and off I went. I drove most of the 8-hour drive here, surrounded by loud music, loud family, and cigarette smoke. Ugh. Thank the gods my brothers don't smoke, and Damian actually makes coffee fairly well. I need a little more right now, since I will be surrounded by 6 nieces under the age of 12 in a few minutes and I can smell the bedlam already.
