So it's been a month since I posted photos on Flickr for my garden. When last I left off I was suffering some losses and things were looking scraggly. I had a combination of heat stress, some fungus, and a friend noticed my plants would benefit from nutrition. All the rain basically washed out the nutrients in the soil. GardeningIt's been an interesting couple of weeks. My plants came down with some fungus a couple of weeks ago so I started spraying a cider vinegar and water solution on the tomatoes. I also doused the mint and nasturtium plants in neem oil spray. And I did a major tearing away of tomato leaves within the course of a week and a half. Toda I did ( Read more... )

It's week 8 of my garden and we've had some work to do. There was a massive rain storm and torrential winds the last couple of weekends. At one point I had to bring the little plants in and one of the cherry tomato beds fell over. But a little loving care (and fertilizer) and we are back and better than ever! What a difference a week makes. All the tomato plants and two of the pepper plants have started flowering. The carrots now have true leaves. The Nasturtium has flowered (red!). I'm informed it's an Empress of India nasturtium. A ton of people all reminded me you can eat nasturtiums. But I can't eat the FIRST flower ( Read more... )

So I labelled everything "week "four" to have consistency going forward. This photographing and logging into the "Homegrown" app every week might seem tedious. It's now May, and NYC literally had a week without sunshine. It rained every. day. this. week. And it's been cold. I believe the average temperature was 55F/13C.
