How does your garden grow?

It's now May, and NYC literally had a week without sunshine. It rained every. day. this. week. And it's been cold. I believe the average temperature was 55F/13C. So of course, I started my urban garden the last week of April when it was sunny and warm. I also planted a couple of companion plants last weekend after reading about how to prevent the aphids, leaf miners, and early blight fungal infection that I had to fight off last summer. Thus far we have:

* Leeks
* Danver 126 carrots
* Little Finger carrots
* Variagated mint
* Chocolate mint
* Green leaf lettuce
* Husky Cherry Tomatoes
* Green Bell Peppers
* Gypsy Sweet Peppers
* Jalapeno Peppers
* Celebrity Tomatoes
* Park's Whopper Improved Tomatoes
* Basil
* Cilantro
* Durango Red Marigolds

Everything except the two kinds of carrots were planted from seedlings. In addition to the carrot seeds, I also had some basil seeds. But the cold damp weather has hindered their germination, so I will probably get some more marigolds for the pot instead.

I accidentally bought 8 Husky Cherry tomato seedlings instead of 4, so we will have LOTS of those this summer. The Celebrity Tomato plant is Determinate, which I've learned means it will likely fruit all at once. So I hope to make tomato sauce and maybe some tomato chutney from it. The Park's Whopper Improved is an Indeterminate, so I am hopeful we will have these for sandwiches and salsa.

I am using an app on my iPad to track my progress called Homegrown which is sponsored by Bonnie Plants. And as it turns out, most of the seedlings I transplanted were Bonnie plants anyway.

I started a Flickr page and hope to keep it organized by plant type this summer. Click on the photo and it will take you to the Garden 2016 Flickr album.

T-Rex has been getting onto the balcony more, so we went ahead and bought a little folding table. This way we can occasionally enjoy a meal or a drink on the balcony together. Here we are on the eve of my birthday with some fresh OJ and lox bagel sandwiches from Russ and Daughters Appetizing.

We also had a bit of a whirlwind birthday weekend. We went to Benihana for dinner on my actual birthday which was quite amusing. The next night we went with tennis_bear and his husband to dinner at a place called Lido. Then on Sunday we met up soulsister101 for brunch at Maison Harlem.

Other than battling a series of colds and allergies, that's about the big news.
