I found something that's made of awesome.

It's called Writely, and it's apparently Google's idea of a word processor. An online, WYSIWYG, revision-tracking, collaborative word processor. Which will happily import and export Word and OpenOffice documents. And allow you to control who can access documents, including publishing them publicly. And ( Read more... )

So, Motoko (my laptop) has been acting up.

Specifically, there are problems with her power supply. When she's turned off, she can only charge the battery a little bit; when she's turned on, she sometimes discharges the battery even when plugged in. (I wrote a bit of shell script to be sure--something like this:

Parents gave me a Swiss Army Keyring Drive-that is, a Swiss Army Knife with a 1GB USB flash drive in it. Niftyful.

Sister gave me The Onion's 2006 desk calendar (Fanfare for the Area Man) and three boxes of pocky. Y'know, I think that girl's got me figured out.

Third night I got the other half of the seminar thingy and a cheap digital camera-five megapixels, no zoom. Still, good enough for what I want it for. Oh, Devonie also had a (Gentile) friend over who did Hanukkah with us; it was kind of fun.

Navi is down tonight. She froze up today and then had trouble rebooting; a quick SMART check showed that her main hard drive was expected to fail in "less than 24 hours", which is never good. I made a hasty backup of that drive and then turned her off. I'll replace the drive tomorrow morning; I have enough money to cover it myself this time ( Read more... )

So, as predicted yesterday, I made a trip to the Apple Store today.

Purchases included:

1. 4GB white iPod nano.
2. New in-ear headphones (the old ones blew out-I won't be using this pair with my computer).
3. Another pair of in-ear headphones, for reasons to be explained.

You think you're media-savvy. You think you don't believe what commercials tell you; you think you know what's good without needing to pay attention to what New York ad agencies say is cool.

But then you buy an iPod, and in a graphic display of the influence of ads on the unconscious mind, you find yourself trying to dance around randomly.
