Once upon a time, back in July, my brother Adam and I set out on what was to be an epic 2 week trek on California's High Sierra Route. The trip had to be aborted, and I said that I would write more later about what happened. The time has come!

Adam and I finally got off our butts. Sunday we drove out to Mammoth Lakes. We camped and roasted sausages over a fire. As you might guess by the fact that I have internet access, I am no longer in the Sierras as planned. I'll write more when I'm less depressed about it. For now, suffice to say that we are home safe, and chose to abort the trip due to bad weather, malfunctioning gear, and my bad knees.

After spending WAAAY too much time planning and buying gear and packing in the past few days, Adam and I are finally about to leave on our epic backpacking trip. It is slightly less epic than originally planned (now 16 days instead of a month), but we are super stoked. We will be doing 2/3 of the Sierra High Route. We spent a week in Tempe, searching for housing. My first choice didn't work out, but I found something good and signed the lease. I will have one enormous room and one medium sized room in a house. These together are a good bit larger than my studio apartment in Portland was. I also have my own bathroom and the shared kitchen and living room ( Read more... )

Last night was fun. Sushi at Saburos and hanging out with a bunch of misshepeshu's friends. Such beautiful nerdery! The spirited debates over the relative merits of Star Trek series' and the analysis of the nigh-universal nerd appeal of Ender's Game were particularly delightful ( Read more... )

I had a great day today, despite its inauspicious start. I had been depressed on and off all week, and spurred by a conversation with Adam took myself out hiking alone on Wednesday. I had a fantastic time. I did a ~12 mile loop in the gorge at Eagle Creek. I fully expected it to be pouring, but it hardly rained at all. It was so nice to get ( Read more... )
