The thistle feeder is basically full, and it is there for the tiny birds who benefit from such small seeds.  If you have never seen a thistle seed, it is mostly the feathery upper region which lets it float aloft on a breeze, with the tiniest of black seed acting as hanging ballast below.  However, for some reason, a small woodpecker has glommed ( Read more... )

Over Christmas, I was standing in the computer room, and out of the corner of my eye I saw what I thought was maybe someone walking several greyhounds along the sidewalk. The small bird feeder suction-cupped to the den/office window has developed regulars. After the squirrels figured out it was too hard to jump onto, it was left to the cardinal-or-smaller bunch. This morning I heard a tremendous thump behind me against the sliding glass doors and when I turned around and pulled back the drapes, I saw a hawk flying out away from me across the backyard, and feathers all over, some just settling, some hooked by the screen on the top of half of the door ( Read more... )

Also on Sunday the 6th, the day after it snowed. The birds are massing in the back yard to make up for laying low yesterday, and some kind of svelte gray raptor was watching from the wooden back fence, watching, watching, looking for lunch. D tried to take a photo, but the raptor was too fast for us.

Saw a fledgling sparrow in the bay window at the Metro, 6th floor. It let me get quite close, so I worried it was ill. Mental note to check again on the way home.

EDIT:It was gone - no lost feathers or signs that something came by and et it. Whew.
