Unexpected Friday, Cain spent most of the day in Glitch's lab with Glitch and Raw. Jeb stopped in for lunch and, at some point, Cain found a collection of exercise equipment in the guard shed. He was hoping for something similar to a football to show Glitch the game - he needed to distract the scientist after DG stopped by and found Glitch about two seconds from dismantling Cain's phone.
Having no luck, Cain decided it would be better to go over his notes again, but ended up sitting with Ahamo and listening to stories he remembered from school. He ended up enlisting DG to fill in the time after he'd arrived in the Zone. Unfortunately, it had been a while since she'd been in school, and past History of Kansas, she couldn't help much.
When the textbook began glossing over major events following the fall of the Berlin Wall, DG couldn't help any more, past the minimal details she could remember, up until she'd arrived in the Zone three years prior. She made a mental note to start collecting some history books for her father, as well as art magazines. She doubted he'd mind if they were old issues.

After lunch on Saturday, everyone was sitting around the table chatting about nothing in particular. Ahamo had been in a meeting with one of his advisors from the city and Raw had gone along to judge the man's intentions; not that Ahamo was concerned. The Queen happened to glance at clock on the wall and jumped slightly. "I have to meet with-" she nodded to Jeb, who pushed away from the wall as she set down her napkin and pushed up from her chair.
"Please excuse me," she stated, making a graceful exit with the Head of her guard.
"Any objections if I step outside for a while?" DG asked the rest of her family. She got a few odd looks and hitched a thumb over her shoulder. "I was gonna pick some flowers for Missus Lowry, see if they take over there." Glitch shook his head and Az pretty much ignored her sister, still reading the day's news from the city.
"Mind company?" Cain asked, placing his napkin on the table. He was so used to being outside on a regular basis that he wasn't faring so well indoors the past few days. DG shook her head and pushed out of her seat.
As she passed Glitch, DG paused and gave him a quick hug. "Don't work too hard." He gave her a shocked reaction then smiled. Cain nodded to him and turned to Az, who simply waved to both of them. Glitch gave her a look and stood to follow Cain and DG out of the room. Once she was sure they were clear of the doorway, Az dropped the paper and bolted for one of the large windows.
She wanted to test a theory she'd been wondering about all week, but she needed more proof. Of course, the two-day 'tantrum' didn't help, as she couldn't see the two of the together. She could have asked Raw, but didn't want to trouble him any more than she already had. He must be exhausted, dealing with her problems on a regular basis.
She should tell DG, she knew, but Az didn't want her little sister to stay because she felt like she had to. Az wanted DG to stay because she wanted to. Still, she should tell DG.
Az wondered how DG did it - living her life without magic. She hadn't seen DG even use it once since she returned; not that she'd used it much after the eclipse. She remembered DG stating that waiting for magic to fix something took longer than just fixing it. But, again: she'd lived without magic for most of her life. Well, the life she remembered.
Az often wished her mother could block her memories, but realized it would do no good, as everyone around her would still remember. She was glad for DG the past three annuals - because she didn't know the things that Az had done, so she didn't judge as Az poured her heart out. All the horrors - she wanted to run. It was no wonder DG ran.
Az would have gone sooner.
Spotting DG and Cain step outside, Az returned to the subject at hand. She watched as they moved across the grounds and stepped out the back gate. She could see Cain running a hand over the tops of the tall grasses and DG leaned over to pick something up. They stopped for a moment and each looked off to the horizon then continued walking.
Az frowned; this wouldn't help her. She'd have to talk to DG. They were leaving in the morning. "Az?" Her father’s voice made her jump.
"Yes?"
"You all right?" Ahamo asked, glancing around the empty room.
"Yes," she nodded and stepped away from the window.
"I was going to spy on your mother's meeting with the city advisors. Care to join me?" he asked with a wink. Az grinned.

"So, ready to blow this popsicle stand?" DG asked Cain as they stepped out into the dual-sunlight. Cain simply smiled and found himself looking toward the mountains. He wasn't about to tell her why he'd asked to come along. Well, it had been his intention until they reached the door. Now, he feared it would just upset her.
Eagle-eye was on duty at the gate and DG gave him a grin and they neared. "Good afternoon." He simply nodded, learning after three separate instances with DG in the past week about her preferred salutation. Cain nodded to him as well and let his mind wander back to his nightmare. It had been bothering him for the better part of two days, not to mention their slight argument following his return Thursday evening.
As they moved into the field, Cain let his hand skim the tops of the grasses and he smiled at the memory of performing the same motion a hundred times over as he grew up. He noticed DG disappear in the grass and pop back up a moment later with a small stick in her hand. "Expecting an attack there, Kiddo?" She made a face and gave the thing a toss. When it disappeared in a sea of grass, her hands went to her hips and she huffed.
"No air," she said with a shrug and turned to Cain. "You okay?" She noticed he'd been quieter than usual - and for Cain, that was weird. He breathed a laugh but didn’t look at her. "Talk Tin Man," she demanded. Cain shook his head and glanced at her.
"Just had a bad dream." DG frowned and reached for Cain's arm.
"I hate those." She grabbed a bunch of his sleeve and pulled him along. "What happened to disturb your calm?" Cain shook his head and DG tugged on his arm. "It'll bother you more if you don't talk about it." Cain stopped and glanced down to DG, considering her words.
He didn't have to tell her everything, after all.
