Unexpected "Is it supposed to look like that?" Jeb asked.
"Yes," DG said with a frown, nudging him away with her elbow. Raw helped Jeb up as DG pulled the pan from the oven and set it down on the stovetop. Raw leaned forward to sniff the cake and threw a glance to Jeb, who simply shrugged. "Icing, guys," DG said in exasperation.
Cain shook his head and leaned back in his chair, giving DG a shrug before looking back down to the table. "So, how are we gonna know when it's cake time?" Cain asked, trying to get the conversation back to the plan. Raw looked at DG, who looked at Jeb. "It'll look a little suspicious if you up and leave during the soup," Cain added with another shrug and glanced down to his arm. He'd folded his sleeves up after removing his jacket upon arrival, and his right sleeve was twisted.
He proceeded to unroll the sleeve and reroll it, not noting the raised eyebrow from his son. Jeb refocused his attention to DG, who nodded in agreement. A moment later, she turned to Cain with a blank look then turned back to Jeb. "What's for dinner?" Jeb breathed a laugh then blinked.
"I have no idea." He looked between the princess and his father for a second and leaned against the table. "You need to eat," he said.
DG threw up a hand and shook her head. "He had crackers," she said, pointing to Cain. "And I have frosting," she motioned toward the counter. "So, we're good... right?" she directed to Cain, who simply nodded.
Jeb threw another glance to Raw, waited for a nod or a shrug and looked at the table again. "We'll put you outside the dining room. When it's time for the cake, I'll... give you a signal," he said with a shrug.
"Can't get much more covert than that," DG said with a cheery grin.
Cain laughed and nodded. "I need another drink," he said a moment later, reaching for his glass. "Anyone?" Raw raised a hand while Jeb and DG shook their heads.
-*-
"Again, I ask: Is it supposed to look like that?" Cain bit back a laugh and looked toward the wall as DG's face scrunched up and she counted to five.
"You want Charm City Cakes, talk to Duff," she stated, throwing Jeb a fake smile. "Look," she started, moving the pan from the countertop to the table. "I'm sure the kitchen staff has prepared an elegant, perfect cake. This is simply part of the surprise. No one has to eat it," she grumbled.
"Trust me, son," Cain said as he pushed his notebook back into his bag. "Appearances can be deceiving. The woman is a genius in the kitchen." Jeb's eyes moved from Cain to DG.
"He means Jeanie Lowry," she said with a hint of attitude.
"Hey," Cain pointed to DG. "The cookies were good. A little crunchy, but... they were good." DG waved him off and reached for her own bag. Jeb threw another look to Raw and both of them shook their heads.
A little while later, Raw and Jeb left; Raw headed to Glitch's lab to make sure the advisor didn't miss dinner, and Jeb to find guards to keep Cain and DG hidden until dessert. He returned a bit later with the guard who had spotted DG at the gate and they went over the plan once more.
Jeb had to leave, finally, because he was expected at dinner - no matter how much he told the Queen a family celebration was no place for him - and he reminded Cain and DG of the plan. Again.
"I think he thinks we might be stupid," DG said playfully, after Jeb had left, watching Cain unroll his sleeves. He was going to ruin the shirt and she blamed Josh.
Cain pulled his jacket back on and shook his head. "He's just being thorough. Face it, Kiddo: if anyone could screw this up..." DG rolled her eyes and picked up the cake pan. Everything else she'd used to prepare the cake was washed and drying on the countertop, except for the plastic containers from Jeanie, which were currently back in her bag.
"Shall we?" Cain asked, waving to the door dramatically.
"We shall," DG replied with a nod.
-*-
"What happens when one of 'em has to go to the bathroom?" DG asked quietly, pointing to the door of the dining room. Cain fought back a laugh and shook his head.
"I'm sure Jeb will think of something." They both looked at the door again and DG hoped that someone didn't drop that cake. Their temporary guard had dropped the cake off in the kitchen, with specific orders to the servers to deliver both cakes to the dining room, DG's first. DG threw a glance at her watch.
Five more minutes.
She clicked her tongue and glanced down the hallway. "So," she started, turning back to Cain, who was leaning against the door frame with his arms crossed. "Jeb's lookin' good. A little thin, but-" she whispered with a nod. Cain breathed a laugh and nodded in agreement.
Cain opened his mouth to say something but the click of the door latch caused both of them to look down to the doorknob. DG's nerves tightened in the pit of her stomach all of a sudden and she looked up to Cain. He gave her a supportive nod and took a deep breath for pushing the door open a bit more.
-*-
"Are you ready for dessert, Azkadellia?" the Queen asked. Az looked up from the other end of the table, when she was talking quietly with Glitch and Raw.
"Please," she said simply, and looked back to Glitch. Jeb glanced up to the Queen, nodded and pushed his seat back. His placed a hand on Raw's shoulder as he passed and Raw gave him the slightest nod before glancing at the Queen.
Jeb moved around the table and stepped a bit wider than necessary, taking a moment to nod to the guard nearest the door. Jeb then reached for the door handle and turned it just enough to free the latch and let the door give before giving the guard another nod and continuing around the room to the kitchen door.
He hoped that no one had noticed his detour, looking at Raw as he continued around the table. Raw made no indication that anyone had noticed and braced himself for the flood of emotions he knew was going to follow. Jeb pulled the door to the kitchen open and a cart was wheeled in with the covered cake.
Jeb watched from the opposite end of the dining room as his father slipped into the room. Cain held the door open and DG popped in under his arm and caught her parents' eyes as the attendant to the cake removed the lid. Raw caught his breath as the Queen spotted DG. Her hand immediately went to Ahamo's arm and Raw flinched when he saw DG.
Glitch and Az both gave DG's cake a look - each raising an eyebrow - and Glitch noticed movement out of the corner of his eye. Looking up to Az, he instead saw DG and blinked, leaning back in his chair.
DG leaned toward Az and poked the edge of the cake pan, catching some of the frosting on her finger. "I'd stick with the other one, if I were you," she said with a smile and licked the frosting off her finger, knowing that Az was staring at her in shock. "Happy Birthday, big sister," DG said with a wide grin and breathed a laugh as Az started to cry. DG pulled her into a hug as Glitch looked up to Cain in shock.
Jeb and Raw gave each other a nod and DG turned her head to glance at her parents; her mother had one hand covering her mouth and the other in her father's hand.
It was gonna be a long night.
