Chapter 13: Cloudy Inhibitions

Shige stood, leaning against a wall outside the 'Kirei Japan' building, wind blowing over him, waking him up from his daze. He was there way before he was supposed to be, but he couldn't sleep and figured that he was late the day before, so what better way to make up for it than to be early? Though, in reality, it was just his own way of easing the guilt.

"Umm...are you waiting for something? The door is open.." said a boy, seemingly around Shige's age, with thin brown hair which fell over his face.
Shige shook his head. "I'm a bit early...I'm just an intern so I don't really want to be wandering around the building.." Shige said nervously.
"Oh come on, it's not like this is a prison!" the boy said with a smile.
Maybe to you it isn't....
"I'm Masuda Takahisa, the chef here." the boy continued, holding out his hand. "Everyone calls me Massu though." It was as if this 'Massu's smile was contagious, because Shige didn't feel as down as he did before.
"Nice to meet you, my name's Kato Shigeaki." he said, shaking Massu's hand.
"Anything I can help you with, Kato-kun?" he asked, still wearing a huge grin.
"Um..well... do you happened to know the models here?"
"Of course, they're the pickiest eaters I have ever seen! Haha, kidding. I've worked in the kitchen for a while, so I guess I know them pretty well."
"Are they always so....touchy?" Shige asked with a disturbed expression, which made Massu wonder what had happened to him, though he was sure he already knew the answer.
"Uh...from what I've seen..yes. They tend to hang on everyone, especially Tegoshi and Jiji. All of them are pretty clingy, except for Nishikido-kun...he tends to sit off to the side most of the time. I don't think you have to worry about him."
Shige blushed slightly as he looked down at his hands. "Oh..okay. Thank you."
"No problem! Listen..you don't have to stand out here....everyone usually hangs out in the second floor lobby. You should check it out, ne?"
Shige nodded and bowed farewell, heading off to the second floor.
~~~
"SHIIIGE! Yatta~ My lovey-dovey's here!~" Jiji yelled, running over to Shige who hadn't even gotten fully up the stairs yet.
Ryo sat up from where he was laying down.
She wrapped her arms around Shige, twisting him around. "I missed you!~"
"Oi! Jiji...what's this lovey-dovey crap? That's fucking disgusting.." He growled and laid back down.
"Oh shut up, grumpy-head! Just go back to sleep." She yelled back, even though her voice still contained an immense amount of sweetness.
"Anyway..I'm loving your button down shirts...you seem so...so boy next door." She said, eyeing Shige's clothes.
"Um..thanks..I think.." Shige said shyly, wondering if being a 'boy next door' was a good thing or not..
I missed you Shige..." she said pouting.
"I've only met you once..." Shige said gently, trying to push her away without being too rough.
Oh, so you yell at me for calling you Shige but when she says it it's no big deal?
Suddenly, another pair of arms were wrapping around Shige's waist from the opposite direction.
"Kato-kun sandwich!~Looks yummy, I wanna eat it~" Tegoshi said bubbly, placing his head on Shige's shoulder, mouth way too close for comfort to Shige's neck, and hands way too low, grabbing Shige's belt buckle.
Ryo rolled over on the couch, gripping the couch material harder and harder until it almost ripped, breathing harshly.
Get...the hell...away from him..
Shige blushed and pushed them away as gently as he could, not wanting either to fall down the staircase. He walked past Jiji and took a few steps closer to Ryo, who was laying on his right ear, his left arm bent over the other.
Just do what you practiced..you did it over and over again last night...
"Nishikido-san? Can I talk to you for a second?" he asked, forcing himself to remain calm.
Ryo shuffled a bit and looked up at him with groggy eyes, surprised, only able to respond with a dumbfounded "Huh?"
"Please?"
Ryo nodded, suspicious of the sudden change in his behavior, but followed him into the hallway nonetheless.
~~~
Even though he had mapped out the whole conversation in his head a dozen times, Shige was still nervous.

"Listen..." Shige said, turning to Ryo. "I'm...I'm sorry...about yesterday. You helped me out and I didn't thank you. So I wanted to apologize..and also to thank you for helping me out."
"It's no big deal." Ryo said flatly, not able to come up with any other words.
Shige let out a big sigh. "Look..if we both want to keep our jobs..we have to find a common ground. I'm not saying we should be friends..but we need to at least be colleagues and not strangers.."
Ryo's eyes narrowed. "Strangers? Sh-..Kato-san...we're not str-"
"Do you agree with me or not?" Shige said bluntly.
Ryo sighed. "Yeah.."
"Great...it's settled then." Shige said dryly, walking away back to the lobby.
I can't do that, Shige...I can't BE just your colleague....Ryo thought, looking back at the disappearing figure.
~~~
"Ne, ne..Jiji and I were talking. Do you want to go out drinking with us tonight? Both of you.." Tegoshi asked, motioning to both Shige and Ryo.
"Sure.." Ryo slunk back on the couch, laying down once again, in the same position as before.
Tegoshi turned to Shige and smiled. "Ne..what about you?"
Shige froze as he thought of the idea, as two words came to his head. Ryo...alcohol...All he could think about was that night Ryo came to his house, drunk....and even though the situation was so..so wrong...he had experienced how good it felt to be subjected to Ryo's gentle yet passionate desires..
His heart fluttered as the images flowed through his head.
"Ano...Kato-kun?"
Shige snapped out of it. "Um..I...I gues-"
"YAY!" The 2 yelled, running over to their previous positions hanging on Shige.
~~~
That night, Shige, to his surprise, actually had a decent time. He talked to Tegoshi and Jiji(who were thankfully not clinging on him) and occasionally Ryo in passing.

"So, Shige...what were you like in high school? I bet you were some artsy, popular guy, huh?" Jiji asked, bringing her glass up to her lips.
"Um..not really, no. I don't really like talking about high school..." Shige said, trying to get them to change the subject.
"Oh come on! You don't have any embarassing stories? Regrets? Bad relationships? Anything?" Tegoshi prodded.
Ryo looked over at him, able to tell that he was becoming nervous.
"Well..I regret ever becoming a tutor.." Shige mumbled, thinking it was inaudible to the rest.

Ryo's heart dropped into his stomach, where it began to squeeze and twist mercilessly. What?...
"You were a tutor?" Jiji asked, obviouslty hearing him despite Shige's judgement.
Shige's eyes shot up. "Huh? No.." through the corner of his eye Shige could see Ryo finishing his drink and taking Tegoshi's, drinking that as well.
"Hey!" Tegoshi protested, glaring at Ryo.
He finished the drink and panted, eyes dark as he looked to the floor.
"Umm..you okay there?" Jiji asked worriedly.

Ryo just nodded and refilled the glass, drinking it.
Shige's eyes were fixed on Ryo, who seemed to be fading rather quickly. His heart beat rapidly as he saw Ryo drink yet another shot.
"Nishikido-san..maybe you should stop.." Shige said, though Ryo acted if he didn't hear it, or didn't care.

Ryo slammed the glass down and stumbled standing up, walking away from the table. And the other 3 looked at him anxiously.
"Someone should go and make sure he's alrig-"
"I'll go." Shige said firmly as he got up and ran after him, out of the bar.
~~~
"Nishikido-san!" Shige yelled, catching up.
Ryo glared back at Shige darkly, which made Shige stop short.
That look...why would you look at me like that? Shige's face grew white.
"Leave me the fuck alone. That's what you wanted, wasn't it? So go back to your little buddies...I'm fine on my own." Ryo snarled.
"I can't do that..you're without a car in the middle of the city with alcohol in your system..."
"Oh stop trying to act like a goody-goody. You said it yourself. You wish you never tutored me. Okay, so fine. If you didn't tutor me, then you never knew me. Great, just like you wanted."
Shige's heart began to ache sharply. "I didn't mean that.."
"Oh save it! You don't like me..you hate me. I get it! I'll leave you alone. You're making me go fucking insane. I can't think, I can't sleep, I can't eat. Damnit, Shige..." Ryo trailed off, walking a few steps away.
"I don't hate you.." Shige said, voice breaking.
"Whatever...oh and sorry. I meant Kato-san.." Ryo said, watching as a bus pulled up, and he got in.
Shige impulsively got onto the bus behind him, walking through the crowd of people and finding Ryo, standing in a corner. He grabbed onto an empty ring next to him.
They rode for a while in silence. Ryo looked out the window and never looked at Shige once. Shige glanced at Ryo every once in a while, but not a word was said.
At the next stop, a large crowd of drunken college students got onto the bus and stood around Shige. Shige looked up to Ryo but Ryo still did not move his eyes from where they were fixed on the passing scenery.
"Ne..what's a good little boy like you doing in this part of town? Going home to your mommy? Hah, that's cute..." one of the guys said into Shige's ear. Shige turned away, glancing up at Ryo who just continued staring outside.
"Don't like this? Huh?" he said, getting closer and closer. "You're scared? Why don't you do something about it?" he said laughing.
Shige closed his eyes and turned his head away as far as he could before he felt a warm hand next to his on the ring. He opened his eyes to see Ryo standing next to him, glaring at the drunken man.
"And why don't you go fuck yourself? You worthless piece of shit.." Ryo snapped with rage in his eyes.
Shige looked up at Ryo thankfully as Ryo grabbed his arm and led him into the corner. He placed Shige with his back against the corner, facing him, grabbing back onto the ring he was holding before. It was as if he was shielding Shige from the drunken men. Shige's heart grew heavy as he looked out the window, Ryo doing the same.
At the next stop, another big crowd entered the already crowded bus, and everyone pushed and shoved for access. Ryo was pushed farther and farther into Shige until their bodies were flush against eachother. Shige looked up at Ryo, who was now looking down at him. It was as if time stopped, as an atmosphere of warmth and a sense of comfort enveloped them, and all reservations seemed to vanish among the sounds of the crowd. Ryo looked into Shige's big, round eyes, and his heart began to skip like it did when they were kids, happy together without any fears.
Shige looked into Ryo's dark eyes and wondered which side to believe...the side who protects him and is worried and gentle? Or the one who hurts him beyond words and then leaves, never saying a word in the entire time apart?
Ryo's heart began to flame as he saw the glint of innocence in Shige's eyes, and he was forced to turn away. No...no..I can't..
They stayed like that for the remainder of the time on the bus, until they had to get off at Ryo's apartment. Ryo grabbed Shige's arm and led him through the crowd and out the door.
Once the bus drove away, Ryo let go of Shige's arm, walking away. "You can go now..I'm home. I can call you a taxi, if you want."
Shige's heart twisted watching Ryo walk away. "Um..Nishikido-san?"
Ryo turned and looked at him expressionless. "What?"
"I..I don't want to leave you alone like this..." Shige said, his voice breaking.
"It's not like this is the first time I drank.." Ryo smirked. "I know how to take care of myself."
"I just...want to make sure...I'm here anyway.." Shige said, voice still low.
"If you want...I don't care either way." Ryo said, walking up the stairs. ....control yourself Ryo...
Shige followed him up the stairs and followed him despite what happened in the past...something inside wasn't letting him leave until he saw that Ryo was okay...
A/N: Ehh...fail. >_< Cliffhanger, too. And I realized the story will have 15 chapters. ;) I wanted to take a second to thank praghufanfic for helping me sort out my confusion with this story...thank you so much..did you see I threw in a little shout out to you in one of Jiji's epic lines? XD ^^ And a bit of Massu in this chap. Somehow Pi disappeared, but he will return...somehow. Also, I am cutting out a big chunk..because if I added all the stuff I was going to, the story would drag on way too long. -_-; Forgive any mistakes...it's 10:30PM and I haven't done my HW yet...bad time management FTL!
