Chapter 9: Internship
The cool, brisk wind blew against Shige's face and tossled his hair softly. It was a cold morning, 6AM, dew still evident on the small patches of grass below him. Shige squatted down, in torn jeans and a black leather jacket, necklace clanking against his camera while bringing it to his face and scanning around, looking for an image to capture.
He did this every morning...before everyone awoke and the children began to play together in the park, he would walk there and take photos of anything and everything that happened to arouse his interest. He always walked in silence, not thinking, just focusing on the beauty of nature, and the purity of everything that was left alone by the the hands of mankind.
He snapped a picture of the sunrise shining through the flowing branches of the trees before him, taking in the sounds around him. He stood up, brushing the dirt off his jeans, and brought the camera to his side.
He felt his phone vibrating in his left pocket. He shifted his grip on the camera and brought the phone to his ear with his free hand.
"Hello?" Shige answered.
"Ah-Kato-san? This is Yokada from 'Kirei Japan' Magazine."
Shige straightened up, as if the man was standing before him. "Yes, sir. Good morning."
"Good morning...listen..I've been trying to contact you but then my secretary informed me that I had the wrong number..but anyway, I remember that you were looking for a place to intern during the summer? I might have something for you. Are you free right now?"
Shige almost dropped his camera in excitement, a large smile appearing on his face. "Yes! I'm free. I'll be right there. Thank you!!"
Shige ran and caught a cab, but it couldn't drive fast enough. The moment he had been waiting for was finally here. Ever since the last day of his freshman year at college, he was putting in applications to every magazine he could think of. 'Kirei Japan' was the magazine that had been including his photos every week for a few months now as part of their "Amateur Photographers" program. Shige knew they liked his work, and was hoping they would consider him for an internship. Now that it was actually happening, he couldn't contain his excitement.
~~~
"Ah..Kato-san, you're here. Great, have a seat." Yokada said, motioning to the chair in front of his desk.
Shige shut the door behind him and bowed respectfully before sitting down.
"You're quite talented at photography. Some of those pictures you send in look professional. It's very nice to see." Yokada said, smiling.
Shige didn't know how to respond after receiving such a big compliment. "Th-Thank you." he said nervously, bowing his head.
"Here's the deal. I'm sure you know our magazine releases on a weekly basis. Next month, we're planning a nature theme for our 'Faces of Japan' section. Since that seems to be your forte, I figured it would be a perfect time for you to show us what you're made of." he smiled.
Shige's face froze. "Faces of Japan?" he said shakily.
Yokada looked at him blankly. "Yes...the section which features our models. I'm sure you've seen them before. Yamasaki-san, Nishikido-san, Kurota-san...the usuals."
Shige's face dropped and his eyes became dark. No...please God no...I can't do this...I don't want to see him, let alone work with him...no..Shige panicked, fumbling with his fingers and looking down at his lap.
"K-Kato-san?" Yokada questioned.
Shige was shaken out of his thoughts and looked at him. "Huh?...Oh..sumimasen..Thank you very much for the offer..." Shige gulped. "I-I'll take it." He bowed his head as Yokada stood up from his desk.
"Great! Did I mention that you start today? The first shoot is in a few hours. I'm sorry for the short notice, but like I said, the phone numbers and such...let's get you signed in in the lobby and get you a pass so security doesn't throw you out." he winked, leading Shige out the door.
Maybe...maybe he won't be in this shoot....that'll give me more time to think about what to do..what to say...Shige's heart beat nervously as he made his way down to the lobby.
~~~
"Okay! That's it. You're one of us now." Yokada said cheerfully as he draped the lanyard with the name tag over Shige's neck.
Shige bowed. "Thank you..."
"I have to warn you...some of the models are a bit...moody. Ah!" He looked as if he noticed something in the distance. "If it isn't Mr. Moody himself."
Shige felt chills running through his whole body, causing his face to grow pale as he heard an all too familiar voice...a voice he hadn't heard for the past 5 years...
"Yes...yes I know! Be nice to the photographer, don't lash out at employees...blah blah blah. I get it." Ryo snapped as he walked through the doors, wearing a t-shirt, jeans and a hat.
"I know, Nishikido-san...but you still have a bit of a problem controlling your mouth.." his manager said firmly.
"Yeah, yeah, poison tongue, whatever. People just need to deal with it and stop complaining like fucking babies." Ryo stopped as he heard someone call him from over by the front desk.
"Nishikido-san! Come here, there's someone I want you to meet." Yokada yelled over to him.
Shige's heart began to race. No..please...don't make him come over here...Shige could feel his presence get closer.
"What do you want?" he sneered as he stopped, about a foot away from Shige. Shige turned his face away. Go away...just leave...please don't recognize me...
"Well aren't you just a pleasure in the morning?" Yokada frowned.
Ryo tilted his head with a cocky smirk. "Aren't I?"
Ryo's voice echoed in Shige's ears, and he felt a million emotions rising up inside of him. He wanted to be anywhere but there.
"Who is this?" Ryo asked rudely, looking over disgustedly the strangely familiar looking boy standing before him.
"This...this is our new intern."
Ryo scoffed and rolled his eyes. "Shit. I fucking hate interns. Always thinking they know everything."
"Don't be rude, Nishikido-san." Yamada scolded.
"Hello?" Ryo stuck his face closer to Shige's head, trying to catch a glimpse of Shige's face, but he just turned away even further.
"Do you have a face?" Ryo laughed. He stood up straight, shrugging. "Guess not. Aww that's cute. He's shy" Ryo said mockingly.
Shige closed his eyes firmly, desperately fighting to contain his emotions. Once a jerk, always a jerk....
"Can I go now? I have things to do." Ryo said, annoyed.
Yamada looked at Shige questioningly. "Are you okay? Look at him, be respectful." Yamada spun Shige around so he was now facing the man he hadn't seen in 5 years. Shige looked down and saw Ryo's body, much more toned than before, but basically the same shape as he remembered. He saw the arms which once held him, the hands which once showed a gentleness that was hidden deep inside, past the rude, disrespctful exterior. Shige's heart ached with pain as memories flashed in his mind, and anger as he remembered the cruelty he endured.
Ryo looked him over, his senses telling him what he didn't want to believe. No...it couldn't be...Ryo still didn't get a clear view of his face as Shige was still refusing to look at him.
"What? You're still not going to look...at....me.." Ryo's eyes widened in fear as Shige lifted his face and looked straight into his eyes. His face flushed. Oh God.....Shige...Ryo's heart skipped a beat as looked him over once more. The man before him was no longer the 14 year old boy he had known back in high school...he was much more defined, his posture was less awkward, his long hair was gone, no dorky glasses..the man before him was so...so different...and absolutely stunning. The thing that changed the most, however, was the look in his eyes. The look was no longer like the one he had seen on the rooftop that day...these eyes were full of hatred..
Yokada could feel the tension emanating from the two. "Um..this..this is Kato Shigeaki...our new intern." he motioned to Shige.
Ryo could not speak. Even if any words had happened to pop into his frazzled mind, he wouldn't have been able to collect the strength to say them.
Shige stood up straight, and remembered that this was his job. He took a deep breath and threw away his emotions to the back of his mind. "My name's Kato Shigeaki...it's nice to meet you." he said as he bowed as if to a stranger before looking away.
Ryo's heart stopped. That voice...it's...so...so deep... Ryo's mind went blank. "N-N-Nishikido..Ryo..." he breathed, voice breaking.
Yamada looked at Ryo, and back at Shige. "Do...do you two know eachother? I hear you went to the same high school-..."
"No." Shige answered sharply, looking back at Ryo with a look of resentment. "No, sir...I don't know him."
Shige's answer sent knives into Ryo's chest. What..what do you mean you don't know me...
"Nishikido-san! We need you in wardrobe...come on!" his manager yelled.
Ryo looked back and then back at Shige, who was ignoring him once again.
Shige turned to Yamada and forced a smile. "Um..where are the restrooms?"
"Right over there...are you okay?" Yamada asked gently, wary of the awkward situation between the two.
Shige nodded as he quickly walked into the bathroom, and into one of the stalls, shutting the door and throwing his back against the wall, breathing heavily. Ryo...why...why did you have to re-enter my life? Why do you always do this to me? You wait till I'm the happiest I've been in years and then ruin it...Shige's lips trembled as he shut his eyes, allowing two tears to fall from his eyes. Ryo...I was finally able to let go of you...
Shige rubbed his eyes with the heels of his palms, sniffling. Tears continued to fall as he slunk down and hugged his knees.
~~~~~
Ryo shut the door of his dressing room, falling against the door, heart still pounding. Shige....Ryo threw his head back against the hard door, tears pushing to emerge. How am I supposed to face him after what I did...he won't even look at me...
Their bodies were close, but their hearts were even more distant than ever...both not wanting to see the other ever again. Because no matter how much they missed eachother, they knew that things were never, ever going to be the the way they used to be, back in the day when they mindlessly fell into a tragic love that has plagued them for the past 5 years.
A/N: Ehhh....fail. >_< I'm too cheery at the moment so my angst is not good at all. >_<
