☂ CHAPTER FIVE ;

Nino had just finished his swim. The beach wasn’t his favourite place in the world, but it helps him relax. “From what? You relax and do nothing all the time,” Aiba said when Nino told him. “Shut up,” Nino laughed, drying his hair with a towel. His good mood hadn’t disappeared yet.

“I’m gonna go get sushi,” Nino said, leaving Aiba and his date alone. “Get me one too!” Aiba shouted out.

He walked to the sushi stall where a familiar figure had her back turned to him. ‘Huh? Is it the nerd?’ He went a bit closer. Yup, it was.

“Arigatou!” she thanked the old man who handed her a sushi. She ran away to… Is it that ice cream guy again?

Are they seriously going out? Nino couldn’t believe it. How could anyone want someone like her? What do they do, eat ice creams while they give each other challenging equations to solve?

Nino shook his head, ordering sushi as he watched Mai and Toma. They were kicking each other with water as they ate their sushi. It’s so childish.

He walked back to Aiba. Jun and Sho were back as well.

“Aye, Matsujun,” Aiba nudged Jun. “Doesn’t that look like Ikuta?” Aiba pointed at Mai and Toma.

“Huh?” Jun squinted, looking at where Aiba was pointing. “I’m not sure. But isn’t that a girl from our school? She looks familiar.”

“It’s Yoshida Mai,” Ohno responded, finally arriving. He was holding five trouts in one hand.

“Yatta, we have dinner!” Sho laughed. “All you do is laugh, baka,” Nino muttered.

“Eh? Someone’s good mood is gone?” Nino didn’t say anything.

“Ikuta! Ikuta Toma!” Aiba screamed.

Mai turned her head. No way! It’s Arashi. Ohno was there too… She looked down. The clothes she was wearing were nothing compared to the girls who were sitting with them.

“Do they know you?” Mai asked Toma. “I know Aiba and Jun. Ehhh? They’re with that guy you were tutoring yesterday!”

As Mai and Toma walked nearer to them, Mai realized that Toma was right. That annoying brat was there, alright.

“It really is Ikuta-san!” Aiba and Jun cried as they took turns hugging Toma. Nino ignored them. Instead, he ate his sushi. “This is a horrible day,” he said to Ohno.

“What happened? You were in such a good mood this morning,” Ohno asked. Nino shrugged. He glanced at Mai. She was obviously taking no notice of him.

Mai tugged at her shirt. ‘I wish I wore a dress…’

She glimpsed at Ohno, who was skillfully cleaning the fish before he grilled it.

‘Why is Mai looking at him?’ Toma wondered, noticing who Mai was watching. Jun snapped him away from his thoughts. “Ikuta! I didn’t know you knew… uh, what was her name again?”

“Yoshida Mai,” Sakurai Sho answered. “Nino’s tutor.”

Nino punched him.

“Ow! What the?!”

“Yeah, Yoshida Mai. You’re from our school, aren’t you?” Jun asked. Mai nodded, turning away from Ohno. Jun clicked his fingers. “I knew it!”

“Well, whoever’s Ikuta Toma’s friend is our friend. Come, sit with us,” Aiba welcomed Mai.

After three hours, the way Arashi treated her definitely changed. They took her as a friend because she was Toma’s childhood and best friend. Mai didn’t know whether to be thankful or not. Oh well, she made the most out of it. For those three hours, she watched Ohno. His smile was charming, and his laugh was like music. But the way he can slip into his own world at any time intrigued her. She would wonder what he was thinking of. He was mysterious, and it attracted her.

‘I really like him… But he won’t notice me,’ Mai thought sadly.

Toma sighed. ‘I guess I’ll have to tell her some other time…’

Nino glared at Toma.

‘You!’ he thought. ‘Why did you have to ruin my day?’
