Ugh, I can't even believe that I'm telling you this.
Okay, so I have these earphones. Super old school studio headphones from when I was in music production school in 1999. They're HUGENORMOUS -- like probably 5 inches around; way bigger than even normal DJ headphones are now. I almost always wear them when I'm writing and the way they fit around my ears is like a subconscious creativity trigger. So during Nano, I pretty much wear them all the time. I mean, I take them off to sleep but I wear them around the house and take them work and I've worn them to the grocery store and almost stepped into the shower with the dang things on two years ago. Not like, plugged into my computer or my iPod or anything... just, on my head. Randomly. Because I forgot.
I tend to live off of foods that aren't particularly good for you (fried foods, fatty foods, copious amounts of lays chips--not baked because I hate them--and candy) and diet coke; also the double chocolate chip frappaccino from Starbucks, though this year I'll have to do without it because my school's Starbucks doesn't have it.
Anyway, all my best ideas come at the worst moments, especially when I'm lying in bed going to sleep (thank god my ipod has this voice memo's thing, but it just might freak my roomie out if I suddenly start talking at night...). I'll be taking notes in class and suddenly instead of writing down what the prof is saying I'll be writing a random scene...it's horrible especially when the prof walks around while talking and realizes that you aren't taking notes.
This happens to me too! I spent last November ignoring the prof completely in one of my classes and writing my novel in the very front row (he was oblivious and the class was very boring and three hours long.) The next semester I had people telling me that they'd never known someone who took notes like I did. I said "Oh, that? Yeah, I was writing a novel." If you ever want to get blank stares, just tell people that you were writing a novel. For some reason that seems to be akin to saying "I was wasting my life on frivolous pursuits
( ... )
I used to do it on the bus all the time - but I'm a paranoid writer - sooooo it would drive me batty when I'd get the seat-mate trying to look at what you're writing, while not looking bit. You can only turn away your netbook so far. That or it'd be silent on the bus and all you could hear is my tappity-tappity-type-type. So I switched to a paper and pen while bussing.
I work best with a drink in hand -- coffee, water, tea, hot cocoa. Finishing a cup of whatever helps keep me on pace and keeps me writing. I also make Saturdays my personal write-in days: brew a full pot of coffee, usually make either a big brunch or a big dinner as a treat, and put college football on and write all day.
Sounds like a good idea - Saturday is a church and family day for me- I should probably try Sundays as that....well except for the few hours I'd have to pause to yell at the football game...hmm.

I just have the bad habit of doing my best writing when I'm at my desk at work. :/ But that's also when I most need to get away.
