I've never done Nano, but when I'm writing, I always have to have something in my mouth. Eating something, chewing gum... it doesn't matter what, but I can't focus otherwise. Lately I've been chewing on ice cubes (something I've apparently done since I could chew), but that increases the number of bathroom breaks. xD
I write out the NaNo long hand before typing. I'd love to say it's because it's cathartic and I feel more connected(I suppose it is/I do) but it's mostly to avoid the time suck that is the internet. When my characters aren't doing what they want, it's way too easy to slip into a Youtube coma.
The internet tried sucking me in too...but because my internet is..umm spotty - or selective - I stay in parts of the house that it doesn't reach - just to be on the safe side!
It's kinda funny because I type just about everything, but I have this special pencil I've had for years. It's blue with penguins on it, and it's so old the penguins have almost completely faded away. Anyway, if I'm stuck on something, I hold that pencil in my hand like I'm ready to write something down, and BAM, something comes to me. Then I have to put the pencil down and type. XD
I kind of looked at my shower today...(my penguin pencil, if you will!) and had an internal discussion with is, as I'm in a different house than last Nano! Haha I'm excited!
When I'm trying to get the words to flow I write with my head tilted sideways. Not like....just a little. But almost resting on my shoulder. I don't know why, but once I was writing at work and a friend leaned over and was like "You're writing aren't you?" and i was like "huh? Yeah.." and she's like "Yeah, I can tell because you're head's sideways again.
It's the weirdest thing...I don't even know why I do it, but that's my weird thing.

/waves from sister-region Snoqualmie Valley (heroprotagonist). I have a long commute driving from I-90s exit 34 to South Seattle every day can be rough -- especially in flood season. I get some of my best ideas, while in the commute time. During NaNo 2008, I ended up at the Snoqualmie pass before I realized I'd missed home, because I was working a scene in my head.
NaNo + Driving = Not necessarily a good combination.
For me, it's this glazed over/ blank look I get ANYWHERE, when I'm working out a scene. I could be in the middle of a grocery store holding a can of veggies or something - and I'll just glaze over and work something out in my head!

I can't remember whether I did anything quirky last year. I'll think on that and get back to you. Haha.
