Have you tried a Google Image search? I can spot a few things there that might fit your description.

It doesn't sound like any European fruit I know - there aren't that many kinds of native fruits here, and I suppose they are all fairly known abroad as well.

Your link set me on the right path in a roundabout way so thanks for that! Turns out they were feijoas, a native of South America (not Italy haha).

Passionfruit has prominent black seeds that are much different to the yellowish flesh of the fruit.

I'm pretty familiar with passionfruit! Turns out these were feijoas.

Goseberries = kiwi fruit, which I'm very familiar with! Turns out they were feijoas :)
