Book about digging to China

When I was a kid, I read this (fictional, of course) book about a little girl who dug a hole all the way through the Earth to China. What made it stick in my head is I remember trying to replicate what she did by digging a hole in the garden with my hands, but the dirt kept falling back in the little hole that I'd made so I gave up. That is a very good possibility. I know I read it several years before 1989, but this could be a reissued edition. If it does turn out that this book was called "Digging to China" all along and I still couldn't find it, I will kick myself. :D Thanks, I'll check this one out.

I don't know that book, but I do remember trying to dig to China with a bunch of classmates out in the school yard back in fourth or fifth grade. LOL

Hehheh, looks like I'm not the only one who was fascinated with the idea of digging all the way through the Earth. How far down did you get before you gave up?
