Learn-the-alphabet videos

Jul 26, 2006 15:12

In 1988, I was in kindergarten at Middle Smithfield Elementary School in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, and the curriculum included videos to help kids learn the alphabet. The characters were anthropomorphic letters of the alphabet that definitely had faces and may or may not have had arms, legs, and clothes. The only one I remember was M, so I ( Read more... )

I definitely remember the letter people. In kindergarten I was assigned letter L, lemon lollipops, and then brought lemon lollipops to school :)

Sorry this is totally not helpful, though :(

Someone mentioned the Letter People the other day, and I got really excited because I thought that might be it. Alas. I'll keep looking, though. :)

Maybe the Alphacritters? I have no idea if they ever had their own show or anything like that, but maybe...?

Here's an ebay auction for some Alpha Critter sheets...there's not a whole lot of other stuff about them on the web that I can find. I used to love them when I was a kid...I wanted the R so bad but my mom would never buy him for me. :/

They look similar to the things I'm remembering, in terms of body shape, though they still seem a bit cartooney. I think the videos might actually have featured puppets.

I'd forgotten about all those old toys till I did some searches for the Alpha Critters, though. Glowworms ... and Smooshies! I remembered the Smooshies for years, but no one else did, so for a long time I thought I was going nuts.

I loved smooshies! I had a racoon that went in a tree stump. It rocked hardcore.

I thought I knew what you were talking about, then I saw that you said they were *not* the Letter People . . . sorry I can't help :(

It's okay. I was really excited when someone mentioned the Letter People the other day, I thought that might be it, but it wasn't.

I grew up on Letter People and had pretty much forgotten about it until I a tape that had re-taped over many times, but somehow an hour of Letter People had survived at the end of it!

I hope you find the show you're looking for :)

In kindergarten (1989 for me), we had something very similar, except they were on records because my teacher was fairly old at the time. Each one had a letter person on it and a little song that went with it, and I think I remember the Mr. M personification thing. I wish I could help further, but I wonder if we're remembering the same thing.

I don't have a strong memory of what the songs sounded like, but I'm pretty sure there were songs, so it would make sense for them to have sold them as audio-only. Hmm. Maybe I'll see if anyone from my school is still teaching there and might know.

Was there ever a show about the letter "Y" being a vowel or not? I think I might remember these things. They were kinda muppet-like, made of foam or something.

Yeah, the Muppet-like thing is what I remember about them. They looked like, if you took them off the TV screen and held them, they'd be kind of squishy.
