A book with wolves and sled dogs

This was a book involving wolves, sled dogs, and a winter setting. I read it sometime in the late 90's, when I was in fourth or fifth grade. It was not by Jack London, but if I remember correctly, this was a paperback copy and one of the quotes from critics/reviewers on the back sort of compared the author to Jack London.

I'd check out books by Gary Paulsen - one of them may be the book you're looking for. Most of his books deal with material like this so I don't know one specific book. I don't think he usually tells you what the animals are thinking, so much, but it may be worth giving them a look.
