A book with wolves and sled dogs

Dec 21, 2008 16:08

This was a book involving wolves, sled dogs, and a winter setting. I read it sometime in the late 90's, when I was in fourth or fifth grade. It was not by Jack London, but if I remember correctly, this was a paperback copy and one of the quotes from critics/reviewers on the back sort of compared the author to Jack London.

- There is a wolf who hates dogs. The animals don't talk, but the third-person/narrator describes their thoughts and feelings. The wolf thinks that dogs are weak and need humans to keep them safe.
- A boy is trapped in the area for some reason. He stays with a Native American man in a cabin and has trouble making friends with the man at first. He tries to be friendly and come up with things to talk about, but the man won't say much or carry on a conversation at all.
- At one point, the boy tries to leave the cabin with two other men (the Native American man was either asleep or went somewhere), but they end up being criminals who steal his belongings.
