Was it "Falling Angel" by William Hjortsberg? It's the only detective novel I can think of with a guy named Angel, but his name was Harry Angel. I don't remember much else about it, sorry.

No, Falling Angel is set in the 1950s.

Yeah, been a while since I read it. I was thinking it was set in like 1970, or maybe I'm confusing it with another book.
