For maybe nine months - give or take - Nick has been steadily carving himself out a comfortable niche in New York. Due to a sudden outbreak of relatives, it's been some time - weeks, even - since Nick's caught up with Alya. New year scrambling makes January and much of February an interesting time to be a psychiatrist, and he's been busy on his own for one reason or another. Neither Nick nor Alya are particularly the 'relationship kind', whatever that vague and ambiguous label actually means. Nick is starting to get accustomed to the only real warning before Alya drops in on him being a quick call from her secretary to make sure he's not busy.
