Killdeer Chicks

For the past month or so, I've had a killdeer nesting near my ash tree in my back yard. I haven't let Polar out at all during that time because I didn't want her to mess with the bird. They hatched THIS MORNING? o.o

Baby birds wouldn't look like that after they'd just hatched...

Baby birds aren't always helpless when they hatch. Some species are up and active right away. Consider chickens.

Yes, but still, if they'd hatched this morning, they wouldn't be up and about. It usually takes baby chickens at least a few hours to get up the strength to walk around.

Well, they might not have hatched this morning, but they hatched sometime between sunset last night and sunrise this moring. And these are also killdeer. They nest on the ground. They run around on the ground like little roadrunners. So, I'm sure the chicks are born ready to run.

Ohhhhhh! I misunderstood. I forgot that killdeer are a ground species. XD I was thinking flying-type.

Yeah. They tend to blend in with the dead grass and dirt in my yard. :)
