Killdeer Chicks

Jun 14, 2005 10:43

For the past month or so, I've had a killdeer nesting near my ash tree in my back yard. I haven't let Polar out at all during that time because I didn't want her to mess with the bird. There were four eggs in the nest, and the mother was doing her wounded-wing-lure-away-from-the-nest tactic every time I went out to water the tree and the (probably dead) spider lilies. She was really trying to lure me away when I was mowing the yard last week. I left a large spot mowed around the nest. I didn't want to get too close just incase something flew out from the mower and hit the eggs.

This morning they had hatched.

I'll try to get some better photos when I get home after work. These were taken through a window and zoomed in all the way, so they're a little blurry.
