On women in SPN fandom, how they are awesome, and why I think we should do more with that

A special note: I am aware that I am posting this on a new episode Thursday and that it may get lost in the shuffle, but it's something that's been on my mind, and I wanted to get my thoughts out there in post form. This meta has nothing to do with SPN 5x12--in fact, it has not even aired in my time zone at the time of posting this--but do feel ( Read more... )

YAY SO PROUD OF YOU.

"Be the change you want to see in the world", baby.

As I said to you earlier, I sometimes think that some of the problem here is societal. In American stories (which is what I write, distinctly American stories, you know that) the men are so often the interesting ones, the ones going on a journey or the strangers arriving in town. And I worry that I'm conforming to that particular standard or expectation without thinking about it. I take my personal experiences and my emotions, my heart, which, like it or not are shaped by my gender, an I almost exclusively transplant them onto a male character. And sometimes I need friends like you to remind me that there is absolutely no reason for me to do that. After all, not only is that not being true to my heart and my experience, it's probably not even good characterization! After all, whether that character is Sam, the Drifter or some new character, he is male and I am female and we probably have different reactions to things. How or why we do is an issue for another ( ... )

I'm with you on the issue of woman's discomfort with their own sexuality being a big part of why fics with them don't get written much (or read widely when they are).

Of course, I'm here by way of yaoi, which is very much understood both on a grassroots cultural level and on an academic level as being a way for young women to displace sex a safe distance away from *them* but still get to be filthy hot. That is, to have their cake and eat it too.

I'd personally say that's a fine and reasonable *stage* but sooner or later women really should own their sexuality. Plus, as much as it's fun reading and writing about this stuff, doing it is better (even if it is scary).

I would certainly hope women get to the point of delighting int heir own sexuality. Some will, some won't. Better to find sexual experssion through slash than not at all.

I SO APPROVE. I'm trying to write more Danneel in fic, and I really want to write more of my girl!J2, I just wish I had time. I hate myself for dropping out of the femslash exchange because I LOVE girls having sex. Love love love love love. I wish there was more of it in fandom, and more good het and just...everything, but I'm so busy and uninspired lately that it's just not happening. Screw you, college. GTFO.

Thinking about Jo and Ellen still make me cry. :( They were pretty much my favorite females ever. Also, Mary. Young!Mary specifically, because Amy Gumenick rocked her, but Samantha Smith is awesome too. micawbis has a great picspam of women in SPN here and she also links to the one she did three years back. Her pic of Sam Ferris in the first post is amazing. :D

Yay \o/ only good things can come out of more representations of women in fandom by fandom. So I definitely celebrate your resolution and look forward to your work.

Perhaps you can post your fic over at spn_women or femme_fic which is multifandom. :D

I feel so fortunate, given all those discussions, to have an flist that is really into kickass female characters. I am so excited that so many people are talking about this, I'm hopeful that it will lead to amazing fanworks.
