the paper of record

I subscribe to the New York Times. I used to subscribe to the Washington Post and I need to do so again if only for the yuks. And the local news. Since all local news is gone bye-bye now.

Here's three articles/opinion pieces that raised an eyebrow yesterday (and early this morning since sleep escapes me).

I never went to summer camp, and never knew anyone who went to summer camp. Are we talking like a multiple-week away-from-home kind of camp? It just seems strange that people still do that, I guess; I think of it as an old-timey east coast thing, haha.

The only reasons I was able to buy a house is because: (a) I live in the Midwest, and everything's cheaper; (b) tons of foreclosures brought the overall house price down into a range I could sort of afford for a brief window that I pounced on; (c) I bought a house with my sister. As it is, my house payment each month is only marginally larger than my student loan payment, which is absurd.

Day camp, not sleep-away for us, although the article was about sleep-aways--whole summer sleep-aways. Like in The Parent Trap! I did stints at camp with Scouts when small but not every year and only two weeks. I even taught at one once. Mostly I watched tv, went to the pool, visited the library, read, and watched tv. The other author was a stay-at-home writer mom who sends the kids out to play on the farm, or sends them into town with the sitter ( ... )

Did you see the one about how everyone in Eastern Kentucky should just pack up and move to the city, because Appalachia sucks? Yeah. Grrrrrrr.

I did read that one! I grew up in north-central and southern WV, and my parents are trying to sell their house right now and move, so it hit pretty close to home ( ... )
