Second Life

Jul 16, 2007 09:53

Hey everyone!  I wanted to post something exciting -- if this isn't allowed, I apologize and I'll get rid of the post.

I  know that some people here aren't really Peta fans, but then again, we are all pretty much anti fur so I thought I'd share this with you guys/gals.  If you aren't into Second Life yet, the only thing I can compare it to is a ( Read more... )

"This is not an anti-furries protest!" - haha, I can see how that might be a common misconception.

the thing that bugs me about peta is how they use naked women to make a point - which seems pretty counter-productive

I understand -- but for me, I see it as a bunch of people who will use sex and any means necessary to bring awareness to a cause that they feel so strongly about. After seeing Earthlings, I can understand this now. If a naked woman attracts someone enough to at least plant a small seed into their brain, then so be it.

I do not believe the ends justify the means.

To me all biases are connected: sexism, racism, speciesism and on and on. I understand that people have "specialties" or you choose to put your effort and resources into a limited number of causes. But when a cause tries to make an gain at the expense of another related cause, I think it's dirty, hypocritical and an ineffective long term strategy.

What if instead of a sexist marketing ploy, they used a racist marketing ploy? How many people would stand for it? Both within the community and outside it. I think that really says a lot about the status of women in society that there isn't an equal backlash. Or that someone like yourself who is obviously compassionate and a woman, doesn't even make the connection.

I don't wish to argue too much about this because its all opinion -- but my one little meager fight about that is the fact that the women are doing it willingly. These aren't men dressed as sexy women with big boobs like white men in black face -- these are willing individuals.

I understand what you mean however -- its just a rough situation.

Oh, and in regards to the pixelated characters -- that is of no fault of Peta's -- that would be a fault of Second Life. All the characters look like that, its an alternate reality and people create their alternate selves. Almost every woman on second life has a similar character, they CAN make them shorter with a more fuller figure, but next to no one does so.

My husband subscribes to a Second Life podcast and they talk about the psychology all of the time. There are no 'ugly' people in Second Life. And its the users that make it that way.

If that's true, why don't they have chubbier vegan women in their adds in real life (or vegans at all)? Why don't they have old women in their adds? Women who don't wear make-up or have a flat chests? Second life does have men too, so there is NO excuse for that. And men do wear fur - to say the don't would be a lie. It may not be a common but it still exists (like the person below said - trim is found on many mens things).

They do -- but I guess you don't pay attention to those ones.

Maybe those ones don't get circulated as much.

ugh, why aren't there any men in that picture?
Fuck peta for objectifying women. Even though men don't typically wear fur coats - they still do and they can still take a stand to never wear them, even if the intention was never there to begin with. Women buy fur coats for vanity reasons and then PETA uses women obsessed with vanity to shun something about vanity... Twisted logic, I have a hard time respecting that part.
Plus, it's stupid to deny that animals suffer and die for breast implant testing, it's stupid for PETA to endorce people who are okay with that but dislike fur.

Men wear fur trim, fur hats, fur lined gloves, and even sometimes, fur coats.

PS. One of my rescued rabbits was taken from a farm due to animal cruelty. She has very unusual fur, it's extremely short and very soft. She is a type of purebred, so we asked why they were raising rabbits like that on a farm. Apparently they were raisng them for fur lined gloves and hats.

I've heard that too. Its like World of Warcraft. For some reason some people can't seem to get enough and end up getting seriously addicted. I was addicted to Roleplaying chatrooms when I was younger, but I eventually grew out of it (it was unhealthy, I swear -- but that was my fault, not the chat rooms)

In my mind though, those people are trying to escape something and this is an outlet. Its not healthy, I know, but Second Life and WoW don't put nicotine in their product so you can't really blame THEM. (but oh! wouldn't it be weird if we found out they were using subliminal messaging?! *paranoia* lol! creepy!)

I know people who get horribly addicted to the SIMS. I tried it, and get bored of it really easy. I never understood why constantly making sure an adult man makes it to the bathroom before creating a puddle is entertaining :-P
