Indulgent foods + Best Soups

So hi, some of you might remember I made a post in January because I had back problems and couldn't cook my own food. Well, another month of agony, 3 hours of emergency surgery and some majorly shitty hospital food later (I was given tuna salad as the 'vegan' option on THREE seperate occasions), I've had a disk removed and the back problems have ( Read more... )

SOUP! 6_addiction February 17 2010, 20:25:11 UTC
I love soups! When I go to the grocery store, I buy as much produce as I can & throw it all in a pot :) The beauty of soup is that you can change the recipe a little bit each time or omit something you don't like without ruining the recipe ( ... )

Butternut squash soup! I like this recipe. Just substitute margarine for the butter.

Oooh. I love Butternut squash soup. That recipe looks nifty, but I usually make my own with a (12oz?) can of cocoanut milk and a medium sized squash (I often cheat and get the pre-cut stuff from TJ's when they have it). You just simmer the squash in the cocoanut milk until it falls apart and stir it up to get the consistency even. I usually spice it with sea salt, ginger, and curry powder to taste. It's sooooo easy to make.

I posted the Japanese broth on here recently, that's possibly the quickest, easiest thing I've ever made. If you're recovering then perhaps add very little chilli but loads of fresh ginger. Fresh ginger is so delicious grated in broth.

I have tried and tested recipes for the following if you fancy any of them:

Carrot and Coriander (personal favourite)
Spicy Parsnip
Spiced Lentil
Moroccan Chickpea
Chunky Mushroom
Spicy tiny Pasta
Tomato (with with chilli, or with gremolata or pesto)

I also love asparagus and mange tout soup but I know they're out of season so unless you can get them frozen.

So reply if you fancy any of them. I love soups.

Thanks from me too. I've never tasted harissa, but I think it's something I need to add to my repertoire.

I wonder if I can get frozen broad beans anywhere in Washington DC. I could use limas, but I do love a good broad bean.

Chili-- so good, can be made in so many different ways, and it's a great way to use up veggies and make sure you're getting the protein.

In terms of indulgences, good olive oil, fancy pastas, and I buy loads of nuts (which are usually super expensive) and things like sundried tomatoes, and artichokes and hearts of palm. Noms.
