In Memoriam: Harold Glenn Veazey

My great uncle Harold Veazey died this morning. He was born on December 7, 1908 (before it was Pearl Harbor Day), died March 2, 2010. He lived to be 101, and did more after 65 than most people do in their whole lives, and we will miss him ( Read more... )

Even more amazing, he was born before Henry Ford started using the assembly line. If you get all technical, a man named Olds (as in Oldsmobile) patented it back in 1901, but Ford didn't put it on the map until the early 'teens. My great uncle was a walking, talking human being before there was a single Model T.
The reason this is so remarkable is because the assembly line is the one idea, more than any other, that makes our modern life possible. The only reason I can lay a hand on something in my bedroom that wasn't produced on an assembly line is because my dad builds furniture as a hobby.

So sorry to hear about your loss. I think I remember seeing you post pictures of him at a party or something, correct? My prayers are with you & your family!

Probably so. We didn't get to see him anywhere near as much as we would have liked, but we made it a point to go down there for his birthday every year. We had a huge (especially for his house) party on his hundredth birthday, and took a bunch of pictures. He was on the ball that day, and we had a great time. He even told me it looked like I hadn't missed many meals, and that I'd been "rootin' everybody else out of the trough." It was great ( ... )
