Cukes and Nukes
A brief, but delicious visit to the Plot tonight after work. I could feel the BigWeather(tm) moving in with the strong breeze and the eerie light, but I took a chance and about 45 minutes to spend a delicious few moments puttering by myself listening to my iPod's "Green Gardening" mix I made last year.

Rain, Rain - you can stay
It's been a rainy few weeks here in Northern Virginia. The temperature has vascillated from upper 70s to below freezing. I'd say Mother Nature was being premenstrual if I didn't think that would somehow get me struck down by lightning, so I won't. ~koff~

Happy coming out day!
So today I jumped at the chance to transplant the seeds I started indoors in my first grand experiment of the season. The weather was perfect for such an undertaking: warm, cloudy and mostly breeze-free.
Of the 72 sections of the mini-greenhouse peat-pellet seed tray, I got about 85% germination. The seedlings were what people-in-the-know would ( Read more... ) -
Growing Spring Veggies in Containers
The reason I have a community garden plot is because my previous townhouse did not get enough sun to grow a vegetable garden. I have since moved, but again - sun (or lack thereof) remains an issue. Experiment #1 for 2011: Starting Seeds indoors
For a variety of reasons, one of the over-riding goals of Plot8 in 2011 will be to minimize the expense involved in producing my Victory Garden. Last year was fairly spendy in terms of building infrastructure and making some costly errors in judgment (BUT! I learned a great deal, so it was not for naught.)

Where to even start?
It's not a good idea to go grocery shopping when you're hungry. The same could be said about going to a seed store/nursery when you're in the grip of Spring Planting Fever.
That being said - I probably saved a good chunk of money for doing my seed purchases for the year at Southern States in Manassas rather than at one of the closer-in nurseries or ( Read more... ) -
You know you have a gardening problem when...
You know you have a "gardening problem" when you wake up after having fallen asleep surrounded by a dozen or more seed and plant catalogs, and your face is covered in yellow highlighter because you nodded off and forgot to replace the cap.
