Ohno rose at nearly one in the afternoon and by the time he finished showering and changing it was half past one. He made his way into the kitchen and saw Jun having tea with his mother while playing a game of gin rummy.
“Morning,” Ohno waved, and immediately going for the refrigerator.
“Oh, good morning, Leader,” said Jun, drawing a card.
“Good morning, Satoshi,” said his mother, picking up a card. “There’s a plate for you in the there.”
“Thanks,” he yawned, rummaging around. “You’re up early, Jun…”
“Jun is so helpful,” gushed Ohno’s mother. “He came downstairs and asked me if I needed help cooking breakfast or cleaning. We ate breakfast together and he talked to me while I was straightening up the house. He’s such a nice, smart, down-to-earth guy.”
“I know, isn’t he great?” smiled Ohno, looking at Jun, who blushed and sank into his chair as he deflected much of the praise.
“You should spend more time with him,” nodded his mother. “He knows a lot of kanji and is really smart! We were watching one of those quiz game shows and he knew a lot of the answers to the questions.”
“What show were you watching?” asked Ohno, munching on a sausage in between bites of an egg salad sandwich.
“The Japanese version of the one that they have in America…what’s it called, ‘Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?’”
“A fifth grader?” said Ohno.
“Some of those questions are pretty hard.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, like today. They asked, ‘What is the closest star to the earth?’”
“What kind of question is that?” said Ohno stuffing his mouth with fried rice. “Oh, did Jun make this fried rice?”
“He did-do you know the answer to that question?”
“What? The closest star to the earth?”
“Alpha Centauri?”
“I thought it was Betelguese. But Jun-kun got it right.”
“It wasn’t Alpha Centauri?”
“It’s actually the sun,” laughed his mother. “I felt so stupid when I realized the answer to the question.”
“What else did they ask?” said Ohno, pulling up a chair next to Jun.
“Oh, there were some math questions, some kanji questions, geography, English…”
“And Jun got them all right, I bet?”
“Yeah, and I am definitely not smarter than a fifth grader,” giggled Ohno’s mother lightheartedly. “Ah, how I miss the sound of children in this house…”
“What do you mean, kaachan?”
Jun looked at Ohno, who seemed to be oblivious to it.
“Satoshi,” she said, grabbing his arm. “When are you going to give me some grandchildren? It’s lonely here. Your father’s off and about and Tomomi doesn’t want to come and see me…”
Ohno nearly fell of his chair.
“Whaaaat? Don’t be like that, Satoshi. I’m serious. I know you’re an idol, but when are you going to start settling down?”
Ohno shifted uncomfortably and looked up at Jun, who seemed to find the situation amusing and remained neutral as he crossed his arms expectantly.
“Um…well…”
“You’ll be thirty before you know it and you need to go and-“
“Kaachan?” Ohno said, setting his chopsticks down on the plate and licking his lips nervously.
“What is it, Satoshi?”
“Uh…”
“…?”
“I’m sorry,” Ohno bowed.
“Why?”
“I don’t think there will ever be any grandchildren.”
“Why not?”
“Well, because…” Ohno took a deep breath and sighed before continuing. “I don’t like girls…”
“What…?”
“I’m gay…” Ohno admitted quietly.
“Gay? As in…you like guys?!”
Ohno’s mother seemed genuinely shocked and it was obvious that it was the first time hearing this and that she clearly had no clue.
“Yes, and I-“
“Wait! How long? Who? Why? Did I do something wrong?”
“Well, I think I’ve always been, to be honest, but I tried to fool myself into thinking myself I was not until I was about nineteen or twenty. I don’t know why and no, you didn’t do anything wrong.”
Jun watched as Ohno reassured his mother that there was nothing she had done wrong and that he hoped that she would still accept him and love him. Ohno’s mother seemed shaken up, but after a few minutes, she seemed okay with the idea and she told Ohno that no matter what, she would still love him as her son. It was at that moment that Jun realized that what Ohno had was what he had always wanted from his family-warmth from genuine love and care for the other family members. Jun’s family was cold, distant and completely the opposite of the petite woman that sat next to Ohno. His thoughts were drifting to his childhood when suddenly his thoughts suddenly shifted back to the present.
“So, Satoshi, are you seeing someone right now?” asked Ohno’s mother carefully.
“I am. In fact, you’ve already met him,” Ohno said, gesturing to Jun, who was partially caught off guard by the sudden introduction.
“MatsuJun is your boyfriend?!” she said in surprise.
“I love your son very much and I would do anything for him,” Jun bowed.
Ohno’s mother paused and took everything in for several moments. She looked between Jun and Ohno. Her eye caught a shiny ring with the ten tiny diamonds on Jun’s right hand and immediately understood the depth of the relationship.
“I’ve been living with him at his place,” added Ohno. “We-“
“Please take care of my foolish son!” Ohno’s mother bowed deeper to Jun, who looked up in surprise.
“Kaachan?”
“He’s spacey and not the brightest, but he’s a good boy. Please take care of him!” she bowed once again.
“Kaachan, do you mean to tell me that you’re giving me to Jun?”
“Not giving-entrusting,” she corrected, looking up.
“Thank you, I will,” smiled Jun, wrapping his arm around Ohno and kissing him gently.
“What about dad?” asked Ohno.
“Oh, Satoshi, you think too much,” she laughed merrily. “Don’t worry about your father. We’ll eventually tell him. If he has a hard time understanding, I’ll work on him. But just worry about being happy with Jun-kun for now. You’re young and in love…”
“Kaachan…”
“Tomomi doesn’t visit much, but she and I have agreed that we always wanted Satoshi to be with someone who would really take care of him without taking advantage of him. She’s a bit rough on the outside, but she is really protective of her younger brother. Tomomi was always worried that some gold digger would deceive Satoshi, but just having spent this morning with you, I know that you would never hurt Satoshi. You are always welcome here, Jun-kun.”
“Thank you,” Jun bowed.
“Welcome to our family,” Ohno said, taking Jun’s hand and squeezing it.
Jun was moved beyond words. In his world of darkness, Ohno had been the light. When had distanced himself from his family, Ohno’s family had taken them into theirs. He had a promise ring on his finger and the love of the only person who truly mattered. Suddenly the years of hurt and solitude seemed like light years away and Jun wondered how he had lived his life without Ohno up until how.
This is true happiness…

Several days before New Year’s Eve…
“Kazu, come help mom and me clean up the house,” called Nino’s sister, knocking on his door and letting herself in.
Nino sat hunched over his DS playing some game with the television blaring in the background ignoring his sister.
“Kazu, did you hear me?”
Nino continued to play not even acknowledging her presence.
“God, this is why you’re so goddamn difficult!” she said, grabbing the DS, closing it and chucking it halfway across the room, causing it to bounce all over the carpet.
“Why’d you do that for?!” he demanded angrily.
“COME HELP US!!!” she shouted back.
“I’m BUSY!” yelled Nino.
“You’re just on your stupid DS!!!” she shrieked.
“What’s your problem?!”
“My problem?!” she said stunned that he even needed to ask. “My problem is that every year, I always get stuck with all the housework and end of the year cleaning while mom and dad are cooking while all you do is play video games. We’re both adults, yet you still act like you’re in middle school. What an all around pain in the ass to deal with.”
“What’s wrong with that?!”
“See, Kazu, that’s what everyone is talking about!” she scolded. “You have no conscience. You’re selfish, self-centered, lazy, and like a little boy! You’re so busy doing your own thing without giving a damn to what you could do for others. I don’t even know how you manage to keep a lover because I wouldn’t as hell wanna stay with you!”
“What did you say?!” Nino shot back, having been wounded by the last comment.
“You heard me! You spend all your time with your video games and if you act like how you act when you come home to mom and dad’s, I wouldn’t stay with your useless ass. I’d dump you!! That’s for sure. I tip my hat off to your lover, whoever that may be for putting up with all your BULL SHIT!”
“What?!” shouted Nino.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if that person left you one of these days for someone BETTER,” she scoffed before slamming his door shut and stomping off to clean the house by herself.
“GO TO HELL!” he shouted through the door.
“ALREADY IN IT NO THANKS TO YOU!!!!”
The sound of buckets and brooms clattered against the kitchen floor outside and Nino was left breathing heavily as he slammed things about his room in frustration.

Nine days after the new year…
The main hall of the jimusho was bustling with young idols. As customary, it was time for the sempai to give a new year’s message to the juniors. Arashi had already sat through their message from their sempai and were preparing to give an address to the juniors. The previous year had been done by Nino, who had been unlucky enough to draw the shortest straw. This year, that honor went to Sho, though it was nothing difficult for someone who did the news on a regular basis. Sho had given a brief, moving, intellectual message and had been well received by the juniors. When they exited, there was a ten minute break before the next sempai group was invited in. Arashi was done save for the final meeting with the staff members.
Aiba had gone to get food with Sho. Ohno was talking to Maruyama and Jun had gone out to smoke a cigarette. Jun was just returning from his break when Nino suddenly grabbed him by the collar as he turned down a corner
“What the fuck, you bastard!” hissed Nino, pulling Jun closer to his face.
“Let go of me!” spat Jun, tugging himself free. “What the hell, Nino?!”
Nino grabbed Jun’s hands and tried to wrestle with him with the effectiveness of a house cat against a mountain lion. Nino tried to twist Jun’s wrists with the grip he had, but ended up pulling the ring off of Jun’s right hand instead. He looked at the ring in his hand and it only took a glimpse at the engraving in the ring before he deduced the situation.
“Give that back!” Jun demanded sharply, snatching it back and shoving it back on his ring finger protectively.
There was shouting and arguing for several minutes before Ohno returned looking for Jun. Ohno was walking down the hall when he suddenly saw Nino’s fist connect with Jun’s face.
“Jun!” he said rushing down the hallway. “Kazu, what the hell do you think you’re doing?!”
“Leader,” Jun said, rubbing his cheek and wiping the blood that dripped from the corner of his lips.
“Are you fucking him?” demanded Nino. “Are you fucking him?”
“I told you I am!” shouted Jun, which earned him another punch in the face.
Fortunately, Jun was slightly more prepared and was able to dodge some of the punch so as not to receive quite so heavy of an impact.
“You backstabbing bastard!” yelled Nino.
“You always denied that he was yours!” snapped back Jun. “You were the one who said you both would date whoever the hell you wanted.”
“But it was understood-“
“Don’t give me that crap! You said you didn’t care what he did!“
“But you knew he was mine! You knew I loved him!”
“Then why the hell didn’t you treat him like you did?!” retorted Jun. “Why the hell did you ignore him all the time, huh?! Or did you seriously expect him to be at your side even though you treated him like shit!”
“Shut up!”
“You know it’s true!”
“You’re just manipulating him, Jun!”
“I am NOT! I tell it like how it is! You know that! Honestly, if I could have manipulated him by now, don’t you think I would have done so a long time ago?!“
“Well, you must have seduced him or bribed him!”
“I most certainly did NOT! Besides, we’re in the same goddamn GROUP! What do I have that you don’t have or he doesn’t have?! What could I have promised him that he doesn’t already have or that you could’ve easily given him?! He HAS money! If he wanted adoration, there are plenty of juniors who look up to him! We have the same body parts! The sex is theoretically the SAME!”
“That still doesn’t change the fact that you still took him from me!!”
“Um,” started Ohno.
“And I TOLD you I didn’t TAKE him!”
“Doesn’t anyone want to hear what I have to say?” said Ohno.
“LIAR!”
“HEY!” shouted Ohno. “KAZU, SHUT UP!”
Jun and Nino looked at Ohno.
“Jun didn’t take me from you. He didn’t seduce me or do whatever else you’re accusing him of.”
“Leader…”
“I cheated on you! I’m the one who left you! The only thing he’s guilty of is showing me how much he loves me…”
“But, I love you, Satoshi,” protested Nino.
“No, you don’t, Kazu. It’s never been about us. It’s always about you. All those times I asked you to come with me, eat with me, be with me…you always put your video games first-“
“But you didn’t mind-“
“You just assumed that I didn’t mind because I didn’t get mad. Kazu, when was the last time you did something for me when I asked you? I know that I’ve never once denied you anything. Everything I’ve given has been on your terms.”
“Satoshi-“ Nino said, reaching out to touch Ohno’s face.
“Not this time, Kazu,” Ohno said turning away, leaving Nino’s hand to just air. “I’m…I’m going with Jun…I’m sorry…”
Nino’s face went ashen as he watched Ohno take out a handkerchief and wipe the blood from Jun’s mouth.
“I won’t ask you to forgive me because what I did was wrong. I should have been more honest on the onset-“
“Satoshi, we can work things out,” pleaded Nino. “Come on…”
“You hit him,” said Ohno sadly as he took Jun’s arm and led him out of the jimusho. “I’m sorry, Kazu.”
“You can’t break up with me…” Nino babbled in disbelief, staring blankly as he was on the receiving end of Ohno’s anger and disappointment for the first time in his life. “This can’t be happening….”
