I love Horace Rumpole, too. I came to know the character through the BBC television series, and I still get a huge grin on my face when I imagine Leo McKern speaking of his wife as "She Who Must Be Obeyed."

I have this mental picture of you trying to take pictures and notes of these manuscripts. Bad, Tudorpot. Why would they not want you to have an pens? I would think the library would expect people to make notes.

points up- I added a scan of my notes- pens are permanent, an accident could damage a priceless object. They have pencils for those who didn't bring any. However, I could use my laptop and ruler. The assistant was very helpful, also quite a hunk- so it was not a problem letting him take the pictures. The de Claustro manuscript is on vellum, over the years it has tightened up and was very difficult to open- couldn't really - might break the spine. I will post a pic.
