Humanoid Darkness
The Mutation
AKA: Everything Else... these creatures have far too many nick names to list...
Appearance: These are the general freaks that you'll see. Some have no arms, some crawl, some slither about, and some run like a devil. To go into detail would take a lot of time. Just peek out your window and you’ll see them. Tar spitting or lava blooded, bloody faced, rotting bodied, it doesn’t matter, they look as if they were human at one point, but now look like bags of flesh or worse.
Speed: Slow to fast, it depends on the type. Rotten, blind Mutations with no legs aren’t going to catch up to you as fast as Mutations with three sharp eyes, running on arms and legs.
Traits/Powers: Everything. Spitting fire from their mouth, acid from the mouth on their bellies, flesh ripping claws in their hands, to just simply ripping and clawing at you. Everything.
Location: Every sector. There is no distinction in districts with the Mutation. The Mutation is generally the biggest population of spooks in the night.
Rarity: Common.
Notes: 9 out of 10 creatures of the night will be of The Mutation. The past lives of humans who had powers of their own now wander the night trying to take revenge for their eternal pain. Think of them as Zombies or rage infected beings; some can be handled just the same, others take a bit more trouble to care for.
Big Boy
AKA: Claw Crackers
Appearance: A hunched humanoid looking creature with three elephant like legs in a tripod formation and no neck, with two large long arms that reach the ground. Stone like knuckles to help it move along as it walks, like another pair of legs. The arms have long sharp extensions that fold back on it, past the first elbow. Sharp teeth with jagged edges, like crab claws. The head has two tiny black beady eyed and no lower jaw, leaving a grotesque tongue hanging out of it’s head. There is no nose. Two large ears for good hearing. No neck. It stands around four foot in height.
Speed: The extra leg and huge mass make it a little slower then an average human.
Traits/Powers: Strong. Powerful. Its arms are made for grasping and cracking, cutting things in half with a huge pincer-like motion. With its victim crushed in its arms, it can bring the broken body to its wide open mouth and drink the blood with a floppy tongue like nectar.
Location: Found strongly in the 5th sector, but scattered through out other populated areas.
Rarity: Uncommon, but not rare.
Notes: They seem to be quite dumb but wild, aggressive. Their back is their blind spot, but they have really good hearing.
Big Mother
Appearance: A large woman-like Mutation that has 4 sets of breasts that hang low on her large round body. A creature that seems to have several of the Mutations and Bitter Children around her. A mother of the Darkness, some say. With soulless black eyes and pale rotting flesh with a rusty brown tint, she sits on a ‘throne’ made of darkness and rot.
Speed: Unknown.
Traits/Powers: Unknown. Though she seems to have a power over some of the Darkness, as if she’s angered they become more angered and enraged. Harm those of the Darkness anywhere near her and she will dispatch uncounted angry mobs on you.
Location: The 5th district only, the center of Grayson’s Apple Orchards. Occasionally you will find her at the fairgrounds.
Rarity: Rare. Very rare. She’s not easy to find, but it is possible to see a glimpse of her through a huge crowd of Mutation and Bitter Children.
Notes: Almost like the queen bee, she never fights herself. Her powers are unknown, her traits are unknown, and her speed is unknown. As dimwitted as everything seems in the Darkness, even they need brains somewhere. She never forgets. Mess with her and the Mutations around her, and you will be a target every night, no matter where you are. On a side note, she also eats her own Mutations. With a huge appetite, she funnels creatures into her gullet to satisfy herself. Generally the Darkness seems willing to be eaten nightly.
Bitter Child
Appearance: The differences of a Bitter Child are in abundance. Generally you get the feel they were once children, much like The Mutation, only in child form. The only difference is the occasional child with a burlap sack or a paper bag mask, or something that hides his or her face (you will come to realize it really is their face). These are the intelligent ones, the ones that have a brain to them and will try to trick you to your death.
Speed: It varies. They can be relatively slow at first, then in your face in a blink.
Traits/Powers: The masked Bitter Child tends to be smart. They will follow you, pace you, sneak around behind you and attack. They have death-grip hands and will try to pull you down within them, crying in a child like voice for 'mommy' or 'daddy' - you will be the new parent before the end of the night.
Location: Districts 9, 10, 4, 5, and 1 have the highest populations, but they can be found in ALL districts on the island. They tend to gather more around schools and the poorer populations, and a frighteningly large amount can be found at the fairgrounds.
Rarity: The children aren't so rare, but the smart ones are. You'll find one or two in a district, if that. Count us all lucky for this.
Notes: You can kill 'em easy enough, like the Mutation, but depending on the type it might not be so easy.
Bony Squatters
Appearance: More skeleton-like than The Mutation, bony features seem to stick out under their skin, as if there's nothing else holding it together. Because they have no muscle mass (or very little that is), they appear to be squatted on the ground, hands holding them up, head down. When they see something invading their area, they will move, jumping up and grabbing after it for a short distance, but will stray no farther than they have to.
Speed: Slow to no movement from their initial location, but with a great burst of speed when they are lunging.
Traits/Powers: Nothing special. They use weapons or bare hands to defend what is theirs, not that it's easy to tell what's theirs.
Location: All over the districts with no distinct location.
Rarity: Common, but not on every corner.
Notes: Some say the reason these creatures don’t leave their locations is because this was the site of where they died. Others say it’s the location of where a loved one died and they stand there to protect it. Theories run wild.
Bronzedust Cadaver
Appearance: Humanoids that look like they're melting, or seem to have moving skin. When one gets close to them you can see its metal melted and swirling under its skin. With its gaping dark mouth, it blows a fine dust as it moans. The dust seems to be either a rust, or, as the name suggests, bronze dust. Breathing the dust is hazardous to your health.
Speed: Slow and lurchy, very undead-like, and extremely heavy.
Traits/Powers: If cut, the metallic ooze shoots out, burning. When it moans or opens its mouth, a fine powder of metallic red dust comes out, floats in the air thick, and coats everything around. It makes skin itch, stings and blinds the eyes, and coats the lungs when a breath is taken. Highly painful.
Location: Heavy in the industrial areas, but found almost anywhere.
Rarity: Not that rare.
Notes: The metal can be carried off on the body of a person and spread to others, so do be careful.
Cyclops Walker
AKA: One-Eyed Troll
Appearance: Tall, very tall. Generally over 12 to 20 feet tall. The head appears to be a single eye and nothing else. Two strong large arms with two thick fingers and one fat thumb. It has translucently pale white skin, scabrous knees and feet and appears hairless. Large three toed feet, generally appearing very “male”...
Speed: Fairly slow like some large beasts, but it can gain speed as it runs.
Traits/Powers: Very strong. It can use trees, sign posts, telephone poles or cars as clubs with ease. A crushing grip that has taken lives.
Location: About one a sector. Two have been noted living in the Industrial sector though, and a small family of them can be found roaming the beaches and shores.
Rarity: Not Common. They make no attempt to hide, but there are so few to the island that a person can go months before seeing one unless they are on a search for one.
Notes: Once a being stops moving, it gets bored and tosses it away. If caught, stay still, go limp and wait. It will hold you up to it’s eye, inspect that you are dead and toss you behind it while it looks for something more interesting. Like a broken toy. One of these was responsible for the darkness breach at the Underground Mall, in April 2011.
Fat Bastard/The Hungry
Appearance: Fat. You can’t miss them. Man or woman, it doesn’t matter, it’s a huge bulbous pile of fat. We’re not talking about a 'does this skirt make my butt look big' or 'a few pounds after thanksgiving' fat either. Bloated, huge, dirty sallow skin stretched over huge amounts of fat rolls. But it’s not all fat either, they have muscles to move, and drag their fat bodies across the floor with stubby fat legs and blubber arms. Claw-like nails seem to be super sharp and strong as well. Sharp teeth help them devour everything in their path.
Speed: Slow generally, but if one of them really finds something they want, a 'hunger spike' goes into effect and the adrenaline from that propels them through waves of fat to speed up and grab what they want.
Traits/Powers: None, other than the teeth and claws that rip and bite, weight ranging from 800 to 1200 pounds or more that can crush, or the stench of rotting maggot infested crevasses between the folds.
Location: Richer districts like 2, 3, 5 and 6 seem to have these gluttonous creatures, but they can be found wandering the island at times.
Rarity: Not common. You might find one on a bad night, if you're wandering around in that old broken not Darkness-proofed office building, or down a back alley street.
Notes: Unendingly hungry. People wonder if there were really fat people, or because of the manner of living where the thickest population is...just a metaphor for the gluttonous and greedy corporate world people of the time.
Long-Tongued Freaks
Appearance: A human body with such stretched translucent skin that you can see the 18 foot twisted tongue wrapped about in its chest and neck. When coiling its tongue up inside, it can walk on two legs and generally can use both arms. When it shoots its tongue out, it can extend to as far as 18 feet, grab its target, and drag it back to them.
Speed: Slow paced in walking, face paced tongue action.
Traits/Powers: With a flick of its head it can shoot its long tongue out, grapple its target, and drag it back. Super strong rope-like tongue. It also secretes a numbing poison that affects most people badly. It works slow though and only lasts a night or two, and only where the tongue touches flesh.
Location: Scattered throughout all districts.
Rarity: Common enough to be considered a nuisance, but they aren't a dime a dozen.
Notes: The poison they leave on your skin? DO NOT try to use soap to wash it off. Most report a bad reaction to soap, leaving a bloody rash where the two combine.
Masked Corpse
Appearance: Tall and bony, but still some rounded definitions. A pale 'face' with glowing white eyes can be seen first, with a very long neck that tends to be covered by a fleshy hood. This is what people have dubbed the mask, and if it is taken off, a horrible 'face' under it of bone and blood and screaming pain can be found. Faces can be found of dead demons or children screaming at you all around the creature's body. It walks slow and careful, as if stalking something, and has four arms. Generally it carries a weapon of some sort.
Speed: Slow and careful, paced, calculative, but prone to jumping large distances at a fast pace. Never seen running.
Traits/Powers: Still unknown. Other than getting hold of a person to rip them to shreds? We’re still not sure on this one. Some theorize that if it takes it mask off it will devour your soul, exchanging yours for its own so it can live again.
Location: There is no set location for this one, it wanders like a nomad.
Rarity: Rare. We’ve only had three recorded, but there could be more.
Notes: One account of the creature being unmasked caused an uproar. When the mask came off the creature screamed and yelled like a devil, loud enough to be heard from miles away. The sound is near deafening up close.
The Multitude
Appearance: Multi-headed Mutation having anywhere from 2 to 7 or more heads, all of which have a face, a mouth, and sometimes a personality. They never talk, though, the personality is in their expression. Generally they have very pale, sallow skin, with veins visible under it. Sometimes the heads are 'dead' and hang from the shoulders, mouths bleeding down the body of the beast, and sometimes they are all active and moving.
Speed: About as fast as a normal man. Good balance and body control.
Traits/Powers: Nothing in particular, other than the multiple minds it possessed. Some wonder how many 'souls' it is compiled with.
Location: Anywhere. They seem to be thickest in more densely populated areas but they have no distinct locations.
Rarity: Common but not littering the streets like rats. You'll find one or two mixed in with the masses every so often.
Notes: Confuse the heads. Have one focus on you, and another focus on someone else. Make them try to split up or take different directions. It gets more enraged at this, but it might give you and a friend a moment to get out.
Plague Stalkers
AKA: Mimics, Crowheads, Bird-headed
Appearance: Human body, thin, lose skin, a darkish tone to the skin. The top half of a ‘bird’ skull or a skull of some sort with a strange long bone beck. Abnormally large eyes under the skull with small pupils. Attentive looking. Long tongue hangs from the skull at the open neck.
Speed: Fast. Agile. A humans body but they have an abnormal speed to them. Rumor has it that they have bird like hallow bones. When they run and jump they seem to glide across the air swiftly.
Traits/Powers: Other then fast speed and wild agile grace, these creatures can mimic almost any sound. Cell tones, NV calls, babies, wild animals, sounds of other creatures, humans and human speech. They collect sound through out the night and repeat it over and over. It appears that they can only repeat the sounds they hear that night and do not remember sounds from the past nights. When a victim is lured in by the sounds they swarm in, attacking and beating a person with their sculls or letting other creatures attack a person.
Location: Common but never in packs. They travel alone for the most part, or in small groups of mixed Darkness. Hidden places
Rarity: There’s always one in any large group of creatures but they don’t outnumber the darkness.
Notes: They have great hearing and can be a really convincing human. But it will only repeat things it has heard and not make new sentences. If someone yells for “help” help is all it will be able to repeat.
Sharp Fisted Apes
Appearance: Don’t let the nickname fool you, they're not apes. Midgets if anything, possibly children or malformed adults. With HUGE forearms that hold hammer-like fists of teeth, these creatures are very violent. They run on their hands and feet like apes do, but if they get their 'hands' on you they will strip you of your flesh as fast as they can. On their head are generally horns, as well as one raised hard shell-like spot. They are prone to headbutting.
Speed: Fast on all fours. When their legs are crippled they can still keep a fair pace, but slower. And when their arms are crippled they can’t seem to manage at all.
Traits/Powers: Metal razor-sharp teeth for hands. Hard-as-steel head 'shell' and horns.
Location: The 8th and 11th districts mostly, industrial and dock working areas, and in general they can be found wandering around the eastern side of the island. Occasionally you will find one or two at the fairgrounds.
Rarity: Not seen too often, though more so in the industrial areas. Most records of them state that they travel alone.
Notes: It’s said that if you can actually get hold of the head shield, the teeth, or the horns of one of these creatures and manage to keep it from dematerializing in the morning sun; you can make a really pretty penny on the Black Market. The metal of these melt down to a nearly indestructible armor. Armor made of this metal is extremely rare and so very highly priced. You can only find it on the black market.
Spitters
Appearance: Human looking, much like The Mutation, but with one big difference. The mouths on their faces are as large as the face itself. No teeth at all, no claws or sharp objects. Their only defense is that they spit, be it acid or tar, fire or ooze, blood or water, you’ll never know till it's too late.
Speed: Fast only when startled or aggressive, otherwise they walk relatively slow. Even when startled though, they aren't as fast as other creatures, so you have a good chance to get away unless they spit on you. Their spit, depending on what it is, can fly much faster than they move.
Traits/Powers: As said already, they spit. Fire, lava, tar, acid, etc. The possibilities are endless. They can spit a distance of 13 feet, though if they get a good throw in with it the spit can fly a better 20 feet or so. Give or take. It also depends on what is being spat. Tar is harder and heavier than vomit, and might fly farther and harder.
Location: Found all over the island but have a heavier concentration in the more populated areas.
Rarity: About as rare as the Mutation itself. AKA: Not rare at all.
Notes: It’s been noted that Spitters can also expel a noxious green gas that has strange effects on people. Drowsiness, unconsciousness, vomiting, and spasms are all recorded from this gas.
Tortured Walkers
AKA: The Tortured, Screamers
Appearance: The upper body of a human, the lower body of a beast’s mouth and nose. The human hands are used to walk on, along with the six rounded root-like legs that shoot from the large mouth. There are no teeth in the mouth. There is a large nose, almost hound-like. Creature appears both male or female. Its head is almost always tilted back, and looks pained. The creature has no eyes anywhere.
Speed: Fairly fast in human speeds, the multiple long legs that spout form its mouth and the human arms coordinate well enough to make it fast on the streets.
Traits/Powers: It has no claws or teeth. They sound as if they are in constant pain, moaning, groaning and whimpering as they move slowly through the streets. Some have compared the sound to a horde of ‘zombies’. When disturbed they will scream like banshees, causing ear damage, headaches and disorientation. The sound has been known to be so painful that people have been knocked out by it. Physically, they are nearly harmless compared to other creatures.
Location: Scattered here and there in the city. Found in parks, playgrounds, open spaces, gardens and heavy in the 7th district.
Rarity: Common.
Notes: A good pair of ear plugs or ear phones can do wonders to dampen the near sonic noise. Those of deaf senses are the safest of all, but vibrations from sound can still effect balance and orientation.
The Unhinged
Appearance: Human looking, tall thin bodies, ‘mutation’ like creatures. Dark reddish, dirty skin with blackish blotches that seem to move under the first layers of flesh. The main features of the Unhinged is their long, square jawline. Long, sharp, dripping teeth give it a piranha look, able to open as wide as several feet to bite down on large objects. Though the lower jaw is not attached to the bone, the muscles around it are extremely strong, giving it the ability to bite and tear with strong force. Its eyes give a feel of intelligence.
Speed: Human speed, slightly faster when it runs on all fours or up walls.
Traits/Powers: It has powerful jaws and thin sharp teeth which bite and rip flesh with ease. The teeth have been known to bite through steel or crush rocks. Rumored to be poisonous, but this is not confirmed. Small, gripping micro-hooks can be found in the palms and feet, giving it the ability to swiftly climb walls. Nearly nine out of every ten can be found with a Death Head Squid attached to its neck. (See Death Head Squid for details). Considered one of the more intelligent of the Mutations.
Location: Mostly city districts and strangely heavy in the second sector.
Rarity: Common. Mostly alone or in pairs.
Notes: It has been reported a few times now that on rare occasion these creatures will gnaw and chew at buildings in order to break down the corner stones and attempt to get inside. This has never been recorded but the sounds of the beast chewing on a stone wall is said to be frightening. It is advised that one takes out the creature before it breaks through and lets Darkness enter your home.
Water Tiki
AKA: Water Nymph, Water Devil
Appearance: Human in appearance, its hands are attached to its head. The head is elongated and squared off, tiki-statuesque. Its eyes seem to glow a soft yellow, like lantern lights which can be seen in the night with ease, even through fog. Its lower half is unknown, only ever seen from the waist up above water. The skin looks as if a thin layer of flesh has been stretched over stone or wood. It moves fluidly, like a human creature.
Speed: Unknown for sure. Most Water Tiki stay still in the water and call to its prey to come to them. As a person approaches it, another creature ensnares the human and pulls them under water. (See Devil’s Trap.)
Traits/Powers: Full abilities are unknown. It has been compared to old world mythologies and creatures that lure people to the water and drown them. It has been said that if the hands are removed from the creatures face, a person will become so enchanted with the creature that they will willingly walk right into its embrace. Reports of this are unconfirmed. Generally people drown wherever this creature is found.
Location: Found in Water. Edges of ponds, some lakes, creeks, streams, sewers and anything that naturally or normally has a pool of water in it at night. A sighting has even been reported once in the Water Tower at the 5th Sector fairgrounds.
Rarity: Not exactly rare but not very common either.
Notes: A quote from someone elses experience with it: “It was like singing, though I heard no song. I walked closer to the waters edge wanting to see it. The face was grotesque but I felt it was beautiful. I only managed to break this feeling because another creature behind me struck me from a distance and dragged me towards it. Saved my life from the water nymph.”
Woman of Terror
AKA: Desire Witch, Witches
Appearance: At first glance it looks small, hunched, shriveled, with jet black skin, long black hair, two glowing white spaces where the eyes should be and one single ‘human’ eye at the center of it’s forehead. When you make eye contact with it, the creature suddenly turns into the most desirable woman or man in existence.
Speed: Common human speed. Nothing unnatural in its speed. Extremely fast at projecting illusion.
Traits/Powers: This creature does not attack. The eye in the center has a memorizing ability to trick your mind into seeing her as anything you want. Tall, thin, curvy with shiny black hair, pale skin and red full lips or perfect thighs, a dazzling manly look and perfect blond hair. The possibilities are endless and change from person to person. If you hold eye contact too long she gets into your head. For the next few days you will have extensive nightmares of darkness, pitch black and lots of mental pain. It is very hard to wake up from these Night Terrors.
Location: Can be found here and there through the city. Enjoys the orchards and forests, water sides and lakes. Not easy to find, but tends to come out more on hot nights.
Rarity: Rare.
Notes: Trying to handle the night terrors better? There hasn’t been much to assist this other then stay awake for three or four days until the effect wears off. It doesn’t matter what time of day you sleep you will still have horrifying nightmares. It differs form person to person. Friends, family and others dying, torture, or simply being attacked by darkness in your sleep. There is no end to the terrors it can provide.
...As for this drawing? I don’t know if I’m under some other effects of this creature but I can’t get past this image of it. Sorry. Best I could do when that was all I could see in my head. If anyone else can manage better, let me know...
