Chapter 7:

It had been a plain, boring month of doing nothing but studying for Chinen. Due to the schedule arranged for her by Shuichi-san, even breaks weren’t possible. Everyday she’d have to attend school; she’d have a one-on-one tutorial after that. Let’s not forget the cram school she also has to attend, and the self-study lessons she’d have to go through with the supplementary materials Shuichi managed to get her. On Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays she’d also have her violin lessons which effectively take up all her breaks in class.

Her head was slumped on her desk just dead tired from all the shizz happening in her life when she felt a pat on her head. She looked up to face a concerned Keito.

“You don’t look so well. Plus you’re extremely thin though. Remind me again why you won’t let me kill your poor excuse of a stepfather?”

Chinen looked down, brain still burned to process anything. The latter sighed, taking the seat in front of her.

“Okay, I’m not helping.”

She gazed at him and made a face, “You think?”

Keito’s eyes widened at her comment. It was sarcastic and mean. He immediately ruffled her hair, “Great! You’re still you!”

Chinen cringed, “Ofcourse it’s still me. But you know, I want out of this. I’m studying too much that my brain is too fried to think of anything. I’m pretty sure I didn’t do well on the mock exams. I… I don’t want another beating, Keito.”

Silence enveloped the two, both heads bowed down. What were they to do anyway? Chinen was cornered and there was no other way out of it.

“If it helps,” Keito placed a bag on top of Chinen’s desk, “Eat it.”

“What’s this?”

“Yama-chan cooked it for you. Everyone had been concerned, you see. And as much as I would like them to come meet us, I know it would only put a hurdle on you so I just keep the guys posted.”

She immediately pounced on the boy, too happy to say anything. He could only hug her back. There was sudden wetness in his top, and only then did he notice her waterworks. Keito gave her back pats to cool her down and he couldn’t help crying as well. Everyone knew Chinen was mighty. How even the toughest situations don’t bring her down.

Yet again perhaps there are always exceptions to how much people can bear.

---

Feeling the grip on his arm tightening, Keito looked beside him. Chinen was clinging to him like he was her dear life, her eyes fixed on the car by their school gate. Somehow, Shuichi got Chinen her own driver to ensure she won’t go missing on her schedule.

She was so tired of this. So tired of living a dull, boring, paper-bound life. Chinen took a deep breath, “Let’s sneak out.”

Keito snapped his head to her, “W-what-“ But that sorrowful face of hers convinced him otherwise. He felt what she was going through wordlessly, “Fine.”

They blended in the group of students going out the school, fingers crossed to successfully avoid the driver. Their heartbeats doubled, adrenaline pumping through their veins. She knew what consequence lies ahead. But she decided to go with her gut feelings.

It was now or never anyway.

---

I opened the door to our house, gulping in the process. What could it be this time? Cursing? More physical abuse? Oh great, maybe both.

“You're back from where?” Shuichi-san asked the moment I entered the house. That monster.

“Cram school, Shuichi-san. Tadaima,” That was the only thing I could say.

“Liar!” And it starts, “I called the school and you didn't attend. WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING YOU BRAT?!?!”

Shuichi-san held my face. He was putting pressure that it hurt, “Read the crumpled paper.”
He released his grip to let me read the paper. It was the mock test result stating that I failed. Tears started to gather at the corner of my eyes not because I failed the test but because I was going to get a punishment from him.

“Let's see... You cut classes, lied to me and failed the mock exam.”

Dad took out his belt then slowly whipped it. The pace accelerated as he aimed it at me. He hit me continuously while saying curses. I couldn't fight back and the pain I felt from his whips and words tripled. He heard my cries but he didn't seem to care. He was able to hit me a few more times until I finally shouted...

“Stop it, dad Please!”

Those words are answered by a slap on my face which made me drop down the floor. My tears were flowing uncontrollably but I mustered my strength and stood up.

“I don't deserve to be treated this way,” That was all it took to encourage me to storm out of the house.

I wandered around, feeling lost and homeless. I was never returning to that house.

The last thing I knew, I was already at the corner of Ryosuke’s street. I gazed at his bedroom window.

The lights were still on. He was still awake.

Perhaps I could be selfish this time?

I headed to their door.
