Marta really hated what the house turned into at night.
She hated the fact that she had to run through the grand room, then suddenly switch to stealth mode upon reaching the hallway in order to avoid the nurses. She hated the burning man that hid in the fireplace. She hated the shadows that reached for her and tried to claw at her as she passed by furniture and corners.
She'd done a good job of avoiding them during her nights in the house, but this time she'd gotten a little too close and (more than one of them? How many of those things were there?) had managed to grab her. A scream escaped her as she as she fell her down to the floor. She looked, but she even though she was sure they were right there she couldn't see them, couldn't distinguish them from the rest of the pitch black darkness.
Her heart was racing as she began to struggle to shake them off, because if she didn't...if she didn't, didn't do so right now--then what!? She was sure that they would rip her apart, but she just couldn't--
Maya stared at the girl who stepped into the room. The vivid memory of the black, writhing hands trying to pull the poor girl back through the door on the far side of the room was still fresh in her mind. It was unlike anything she'd ever experienced. Shivering, she brushed her clothes off, as they had somehow become dirty

"I'm sorry." Marta apologized automatically, although she wasn't quite certain what she was apologizing for. She hadn't introduced herself, though, nor had her greeting been particularly pleasant. She swallowed, nodding as the girl continued. She wasn't sure that she understood, but she had no intention of interrupting her just yet. Instead she wondered how unlucky a person would have to be to get drawn into this place twice, and without their memories to boot, although she somehow doubted that was the case here. After all, there was no way out. If there was, everyone would have known about it by now

Maya let out a tremendous sigh. "It's alright. I need to calm down. My sensei taught me to always be calm, no matter what the situation. It's always easier to resolve a conflict when your head is clear." As she spoke, her brow furrowed in concentration. Sending rivulets of chi through her veins, she quickly and quietly manipulated her physical form, and shifted to her smaller, younger body

Marta nodded in agreement once more. Her own father had encouraged the same thing. Panic would just lead to a clouded judgement and in turn more mistakes, and in a battle there was no room for mistakes. Her eyes widened a bit, a small noise of shock and expression escaping her as the girl changed forms right in front of her, suddenly becoming years longer than her previous form had suggested. It wasn't the first time she'd seen someone shapeshifting, nor the strangest thing in this house, but it was still a bit jarring. It wasn't like she ever really expected someone to randomly shift forms right in front of her--though it looked more like she'd deaged than shape shifted

Maya looked at Marta, sizing her up. She noticed the girl's eyes widen, and she deduced that perhaps she too was afraid, even if by a small degree, of the strange beasts lurking beyond the doors to the little room. Or perhaps she was afraid of Maya, and of her power. Maya chuckled in a high pitched giggly laugh as Marta emitted a small noise of shock

A flicker of irritation crossed Marta's face as the girl began giggling her. It disappeared in an instant, replaced by an equally serious, but considerably less moody look as the girl explained her transformation. Maybe it was just because she'd been having such a rough time in the house lately, but she couldn't help but feel frustrated by how condescending this girl was going. Who didn't know what chi was or that it could be used for artes?
...of course, the girl had just debunked her theory about her being something similar to a Centurion and it was true that such things didn't exist in all worlds, but it was still annoying to be talked down to

Maya noticed the twitch of anger in the girl's face, and stopped laughing. "I'm sorry." She cast a slightly ashamed look at the floor, then back at the girl again. "I understand you probably have never seen something quite like that, and it must have been a shock to you." Who WAS this girl, though, to have never seen a concealment transformation? Almost all of Japan, and perhaps the world as well, know about chi and how to control it to a certain extent. Maya shook her head, trying to dislodge the erroneous thoughts. After all, it wasn't Marta's fault she didn't know
