Setting

Feb 27, 2010 21:04

The game is based in the late nineteenth century, during the Victorian era. Between the years 1850 and 1900 is what we’re aiming for, so any technologies found in this world will be based on Europe during that fifty year span, although any technologies the character brings with them is fine (Example, the character brings their cell phone with them because it was in their pocket when they first were pulled in, although there are no chargers and they possibly won’t work). Because D.Gray-Man is set in an alternative Earth, there are some technologies that are out of place, such as Komui’s robots. As such, laptops exist, as well as a network similar to the internet, and are used to communicate in game, as well as golems. Upon entry and situating into the Black Order, each resident will receive a golem. Golems can be used to make phone calls, so long as they are connected to a phone line. Also, they can communicate directly with other golems, and the internet to make voice posts. Some golems may also record video and post them on the network.

Canon wise, the game will take place before the Headquarters is moved to London, corresponding to a time before Chapter 164. The game will also take place before Lulubell’s invasions of Level 3 Akuma, and thus take place before Chapter 139.

Edit as of August 3rd, 2010: As the game has now taken an alternate universe route, bypassing the invasion caused by Lulubell and reopening its doors to missions, along with Exorcists Lavi, Lenalee Lee, and Kanda Yuu regaining the use of their Innocence. Also, Arystar Krory is no longer in a coma. What this means is that characters from beyond Lulubell's invasion in the canon timeline are now available for play. Such would include the Third Exorcists, the Noah Wisely, Exorcist Timothey Hearst, and so on. The setting, however, stays in the Headquarters located within the castle.

Links with information about the time period can be found here: If you have any questions on the type of technology allowed in game, please comment to this entry to ask and the mods will let you know as soon as possible.

The game takes place in the European Branch Headquarters, the Dark Tower as described in the game’s premise. There are many many levels to the tower, as well as basements and buildings connected to it and the land around it is pretty much not described in canon. If you would like to request a location, such as a music room or a garden, please comment with the idea so that the mods may approve it.

Gatekeeper: The front doors to the Order. The only way in by foot. Gatekeeper is a technologically advanced program, able to perform and X-ray examination to those entering the Order in order to tell if they are Akuma or human. If you have any pentacles on your body, though, he confuses them as an affiliate for the Earl, and proceeds to freak out, sending out a warning cry to the Exorcists to destroy them immediately. Although, considering if it’s a misunderstanding, those confused for friends of the Earl aren’t hurt.

Cafeteria:A huge mess hall, with cobblestoned floors and simple chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. The walls are covered in gothic paintings, and the tables are very similar to those you would find in a school cafeteria: long tables that spread across the room, with long benches on each side. The cook, Jerry, can make anything you ask, and make it just as delicious as your mother did. The Kitchen lies behind a wall of iron bars.

Training Rooms: Found on various floors, the rooms are essentially wide open spaces. There are stairs that lead down into a large open space with a dirt floor. Excellent for sparing and similar things. There are also gyms, with weights and other training equipment common to the era.

Lounge: A medium sized room, with large gothic windows. There are plenty of couches here, each with black and white striped upholstery. They are arranged with a coffee table, with a couch on either side. Many come here for some peace and quiet, a nice read, or even a simple place to sit and talk with others.

Sanatorium: Essentially an infirmary. This is the Order’s medical unit, and takes up an entire floor of the tower. It is run by nurses, and the Head Nurse, referred to as he Matron. She is very strict to those who are not yet completely healed, even going so far as to hurt them more to get them to stay in bed to rest. There are plenty of sick beds for those who need healing, and there is a sick side to the floor, as well as a healthy side. Rooms can be private and smaller, or larger with up to eight beds in them. Medical experience only goes so far as to what is available in the time period.

Library: A very very very extensive library. The walls aren’t seen on account of all the shelves and books covering them. There are plenty of couches, similar to those found in the lounge but larger for more to sit. There are also single-person loveseats, draped in the same fabric as the couches. Coffee tables are available for those wishing to put their feet up, though it’s not encouraged you do something so impolite.

Individual Rooms: All those living within the Tower have their own room. Most are a decent size, at least eight feet by ten feet, or even larger depending on how many people are rooming together or who the room belongs to. Rooms are NOT co-ed, and girls and boys live on different floors. Exceptions might be made for couples. Each room comes with its own key, which is to remain on the residents’ person at all times. Rooms vary in decoration. Please see the ‘Rooms’ thread in this posts’ comments to describe your characters room.

Off Limits Floor: (Floor 13)You don’t need to know what kind of room are on this floor. You just. Don’t. Don’t ask Komui specifically, because you might get hurt. Wandering into the rooms of this floor are PROHIBITED IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE.

The Science Department: A floor that is dedicated specifically to the Science Division of the Black Order. Many of the areas here are accessible to members of the Science Department only, but so long as you are accompanied by a member, you should be find. Members are found diligently working at all times, though it’s never quite clear on what.

Komui’s Examination Room: Exorcists come here to get their routine physicals by the Supervisor, but capable fighters may also come here for an examination. Most fear this room when they first arrive, considering Komui tends to get overzealous with his examinations.

The Elevator: A platform that seems to float on its own in the center of the tower. Only the science department members seem to know how to operate it correctly. It’s also loaded with a canon for whatever reason.

Hevlaska’s Chamber: The only way to arrive here is via the Elevator. It is OFF LIMITS TO EVERYONE unless the Supervisor is with you or you are summoned there. This room stores the fragments of Innocence that the Order has collected thus far, and is protected by Hevlaska.

The Forest: Used primarily as a training ground. Though, there might be monsters and the like wandering around at night, so be careful to anyone who somehow ends up outside. It’s very easy to get lose in those mangled trees.

Komui’s Office:Similar to the Library, except much more messy. Papers cover the entire floor, and his desk is covered in papers and books and garbage. There is one double-person couch seated before the desk, used for mainly briefing and debriefing of missions. Exorcists report here for such missions.

Underground Waterway: Another means of getting into and out of the Order. A series of canals that connect to various points of interest outside of the order. Boats are similar to Gondola’s in shape and power source, being the person that propels it with a stick. The currents aren’t particularly strong, though the water is deep enough that the bottom can’t be seen. These canals are housed in man-made tunnels.

The Public Laboratory: Another library, although it’s very similar to Komui’s Office. Much experimentation takes place here, and scientific notes can be found scattered about, as well as half-started experiments. Be careful not to touch any of the unlabeled vials lying about. Who knows what’s in them.

Chapel: Although it is a Chapel, it’s not really used to hold religious services. It’s a large room, with black and white checkerboard tiles, and a huge beautiful alter containing the Cross of the Black Order. This room is usually used to house the coffins of the fallen so that those that knew them can mourn. At times, it’s also a place of sanctuary, perfect for those wishing to find silence and reflect or pray.

Conference Room: Mostly, this room is empty, but whenever the occasion calls for it, meetings are held here between the Branch Heads and other important members of the order. It is a fairly large room, surrounded by large stone statues, with pillar arranged in a circle in the center. Inside of this circle of pillars, there is a large round table, with various tall-backed chairs around it.

Bathrooms: Each floor has large bathrooms, with four stalls and in the men’s room, an addition of two urinals. Sinks completely line one of the walls, and a mirror travels horizontally on the wall above the sinks.

Baths: Similar to hot springs, the baths are located near the base of the castle, in a room that looks like a portion of the forest was fenced in and roofed. They are separated by sex, and have large pond like pools complete with waterfalls for washing. For those not comfortable with bathing in front of others, there are also regular, private baths; three on the women’s floor and two on the men’s.

Rooms from Beyond This Line are made by Request
Music Room: Instruments of every kind can be found here. A piano, violins, cellos; basically every instrument invented up to current time. Most musically inclined members come here just to pluck a few strings and relax.
Clearing: Located outside. An area of the woods that has only one or two trees, the rest being relatively short grass. This can be used as a sparing area for those not wanting to train inside, or as a general place to get away from the castle.

Note: Please redirect yourselves to the Room Assignments post. Request a room number there, and if you so wish, include information on how it looks.

NEW ADDITIONS:

Areas outside the Black Order will now be allowed for the character's to wander off to. Player's will not need permission to go to these areas but keep in mind that all of them, when they leave the facilities of the Black Order will have a golem following them. Is it being nosy, is it recording things you don't want people to know you had to get out of the tower to know? Up to you. These golem's will also act as a warning alarm to anyone who tries getting farther than what the order allows. This means that they can't leave the general area unless they are coming back to the order.

Town: Just a scary dive down the side of the cliff that the Black Tower seems to find its home on lies a thick and beautiful forest. Not far from it's edge lies a small but very populated town bustling with people in markets and shops working for a living and living with their earnings. The people in town are no stranger's to the strange folk that are always coming down from that creepy-looking tower on the cliff but some might be a bit to suspicious. You can find restaurants, bars, stores, and all sorts of places to buy foods and supplies. Keep in mind what you will get in this town will be far more to the era than the technology advanced hardware you might find in the tower.

Summary of the Black Order and Innocence

The Black Order is an organization created with the purpose of fighting and destroying the Millennium Earl, Noah, and the Akuma so that life may be preserved and continue to flourish. Within all the fighting is the search for an object known as the God Crystal. The Order believes that with this crystal, they’ll be able to stop the Earl completely. Selective members known Exorcists are able to use fragments of the God Crystal ( also known as the Cube ) called Innocence as weapons in order to destroy Akuma.

The Earl, Noah, Akuma, and Skulls

The Earl is the First Disciple of Noah (a clan the claims to be the original ancestors of all humans), and supposedly the most powerful - apparently his true name is Adam. 7000 years before the manga begins, he battled an unnamed opponent wielding the Heart ( a shard of Innocence that contains the source of power of all Innocence shards ) and emerged victorious. Shortly after, the Great Flood wiped out all of humanity, and the remaining twelve Disciples founded the second generation of humanity. As a result, all humans possess Noah genes. Once every generation, the genes and Noah memories within twelve people will awaken, transforming them into Noah and compelling them to help the Earl in fighting the Innocence .

Aside from being extremely powerful, the Earl possess the power of creating Akuma through Dark Matter. Dark Matter is the opposite of Innocence and appears as a black haze. The Earl, Noah, and the Akuma are all able to use the Dark Matter as a power source.

A Noah can be identified by a gray skin tone, yellow/gold eyes, and a horizontal line of seven cross-shaped stigmata referred to as holy marks. Like Exorcists being able to use Innocence as weapons, Noah are able to use Dark Matter as a form of power as well.

Akuma take up the majority of the Earl’s army. In order to create an Akuma, the Earl must seek out a person who is mourning the loss of relative or a friend. Upon finding said person, the Earl kindly offers to resurrect the one who died. With the permission granted, the Earl takes the soul and traps it within a metal core made up of dark matter that resembles a simplified human skeleton. Thus, an Akuma is born.

Their blood contains a virus which rapidly travels through the victim's body, marking it with pentacles. The virus can be spread by blood bullets of a high caliber shot by a Level 1 Akuma. Eventually, the body crumbles into dust and gives off poisonous gas. Certain Exorcists and Noah are immune to the virus.

Types of Akuma : :

Level 1: Level 1 consists of a floating ball shaped creature with dozens of gun barrels protruding from it that fire large bullets. The gun barrels are flexible and can be bent to face any desired angle without affecting its firing capabilities. Level 1 Akuma appear to be able to fire beams of energy from an opening beneath their face. This attack is called "Akuma cannon" by the Earl. The souls inside a Level 1 Akuma have the bodies and clothes of their original forms. However, their faces are rather distorted and there is a chain around their necks expressing intense pain and sadness of the trapped soul. Level 1 Akuma exhibit somewhat a transition from deteriorating human personality to an evil personality for level 2 later on as observed in their increasing obsession to simply kill and may, hence, show zombie like behavior in their human form. A Level 1 Akuma will advance to a Level 2 once it has fulfilled a substantial quota of kills of humans and exorcist.

Level 2: Level 2 Akuma are capable of intelligent thought and are largely independent, though they still maintain unquestionable loyalty to the Millennium Earl and the Clan of Noah. The souls of Level 2 Akuma seem to become more deteriorated. The souls inside of these Akuma can't seem to be identified at all and are in a fetal position, wrapped from head to toe in bandages. Level 2 Akuma come in all shapes and sizes (some have even appeared simply as a gas, fire, a demonic court jester, or even a playing card) and they have no common appearance. Thus far, Level 2 is the only state in evolution where appearance is varied as 1, 3, and 4 all maintain the same shape with only subtle differences. They also have different powers, such as copying a person's appearance (mirror image), emitting "ice fire" which hurts worse than normal fire, creating blades of air, emitting destructive sound waves, and creating bubbles that absorb water from everything they touch. Some Level 2 Akuma even carry modern day weaponry such as homing missiles and various types of firearms that resemble machine guns and so on, as observed in the manga. After murdering enough people, it can evolve to Level 3.

Level 3: Level 3 brings perhaps the most terrifying changes of any previous stage. Regardless of their appearance in Level 2, all level 3 Akuma become bipedal, roughly 8 to 9 feet tall, with sharp jagged teeth, and wear what looks like medieval armor that covers most of their bodies. The only difference between each other is the color of their armor and the helmet design of each one is unique. In addition to this, they receive a massive power boost. A Level 3 Akuma is easily capable of standing up to multiple Exorcists in combat and usually has an extremely powerful ability in addition to its greatly improved strength and speed. Their abilities seem to revolve around the use of Dark Matter. The souls embedded in the Level 3 Akuma are near gone and appear as a floating dark mass with eyes.

Level 4: Level 4 is the most powerful and destructive Akuma known to the Exorcists so far, surpassing even the strength of the Noahs. Despite its immense strength, like all other levels of Akuma, the Level 4 still have to obey the Noah clan. The Akuma takes the form a child-like creature with a bloated stomach. There is a black star on the Akuma stomach and a lit, closed-ring, "halo-like" oval above its head and wings on its back ironically making it, the strongest living weapon thus far, look like a childish angel. The remnants of the human soul, though not seen by the viewer, is apparently such a grotesque state that Allen Walker needed to vomit from just a glance of it.

Skulls are the guardians and caretakers of the Earl's Akuma-producing plant. Skulls are humanoids who wear large black robes and have skull-like heads, as their names imply. Skulls are neither Akuma, nor completely human, and are created by transforming a human with a 'suitable' mind using a special form of magic. A Skull places their fingers against the forehead of a victim and chant an incantation. The human is then surrounded by arcs of energy and then shrouded in a cocoon made of a black thread-like substance, finally emerging a few moments later as a Skull. Skulls are very resistant, capable of taking a bullet to the head without any lasting damage. The newborns are quite slow, but the older ones function at a more grown human rate. They have an average lifespan of 200 years. Their duties include cleaning the Noah's Ark, creating Akuma, guarding the egg, caring the Earl's clothes, and other odd jobs.

Noah's Ark: A large white cube-shaped structure that contains a white city comprised of white buildings and a tower at the center looming over the rest of the city. The ark was used by Noah and his family to create the second generation of humanity as told by members of the current Noah Family. The ark uses trans-dimensional technology to travel in between dimensions and to create gates that allow access to and from the ark itself. After the events of the great flood the Ark has been used by the Noah Family for generations. When the Millennium Earl came into contact with the family and allied himself with them he had the Akuma Egg, the device he uses to manufacture Akuma moved into the ark, where it had remained ever until the Black Order's assault on the ark that ended with the order taking control of the ark. There are two arks and the Black Order captured one while the Noah still has the other.

The Black Order

Considering there’s quite a bit of Akuma causing trouble, there are five branches from the Black Order spread around the globe to help keep order. These branches include the European, Oceania, Middle East, North American, South American, and the Asian branch. Every branch includes units and a general for each unit. The generals are some of the most important people in the branches due to their strength and ability and to command and lead their units. The consistency of how many people are in a unit varies, and they usually consist of Exorcists while a Finder, someone who searches for Innocence , may tag along temporarily.

The branch which is mostly featured in the manga/anime is the European branch (also known as the main branch) which is generally watched over by Komui Lee when the generals are unavailable. The units which appeared in the manga within the European Branch include General Cross’s, Tiedoll’s, Klaud’s, Sokaro’s unit. Like all other branches there is the Science Division where Reever is in charge.

Hevlaska is a powerful Exorcist from before the original "Three Days of Darkness". She is said to be the guardian of the Cube (God Crytsal), and has been with the Black Order since it's establishment. Hevlaska is completely covered in her Innocence, giving her a somewhat monstrous-humanoid look. Hevlaska also has the power to store all 109 units of Innocence in holes within her body, until an accommodator is found. She can also probe an Exorcist's Innocence to discover his/her synchronization rate and hidden potential. She resides hidden within the European Branch.

The only other Branch featured is the Asian Branch where Bak Chan is in charge.

Exorcists: The "Apostles" of Innocence. There are currently only 14 Exorcists alive. They wear their uniforms as a symbol of their authority and to provide durability for combat. Another use of their uniforms is to draw the attention of Akuma to themselves, as they cannot tell the difference between a normal human being and an Akuma wearing a human's skin (with the exception of Allen Walker) . On their uniforms, they have Rose Crosses which represent their authority, and grant them permission anywhere in the name of the Vatican (New World Alliance). All are protected by God.

Finders: Supporters of the Exorcists, and members of the Black Order. They are sent to scout out places where an Innocence may be located, and if the chances are high, they call in the Exorcists. Their uniform is a light yellowish outfit with a hood. They carry a telephone on their backs. The only method Finders have of protecting themselves is the creation of a barrier using what appear to be very large flashlights. When several Finders use the lights in conjunction the barrier can stop almost any number of level 1 Akuma. The lights can also be used offensively by several finders focusing the beam on an Akuma which traps it in a barrier.

Crow (Central Office Battle Corps): An elite group of humans from the Black Order who act as special enforcers. Though they are not endowed with Innocence, they possess unique skills and the ability to cast powerful spells to bind their enemies. It was originally believed that Crow was only capable of temporarily hindering Akuma, but their power apparently goes beyond that.

Second Exorcists: Artificial exorcists created through the Second Exorcist program, which took place around two decades before the start of the events in D. Gray Man. The program was an attempt to create human beings who could join with the Innocence. It is not made clear what was done to prepare these artificial to bond with the Innocence but a powerful regeneration ability was included in their making so they could recover and survive from the stresses caused by the innocence during the bonding process. The program was a failure and there is only one known surviving Second exorcist.

Third Exorcists: Humans from Crow who were biologically engineered into Half-Akumas. They gain the power to consume other Akuma and immense strength while having the ability to perform spells and charms.

Bookmen: A clan that records the hidden history of the world. Currently, they are entrusted by the Vatican to observe and record the war with the Millennium Earl. There are only two known Bookmen in the series so far - both of which reside at the European branch.

Innocence

Innocence is used by Exorcists chosen by the Innocence to wield them (they appear to them in a form of a humanoid or animal-like creature). Each piece of Innocence is different and is specifically created for their use. Innocence is somewhat sentient and can make up it's own mind who it will use as a host or something else.

The Innocence was originally a golden cube, inscribed with what is described by Hevlaska as an ancient prophecy: Our descendants, We have battled the darkness, and they are a dying breed. There will be calamity in the future, so we leave behind this message here in order to help you. It is revealed that the cube was made by people who had fought the Millennium Earl, and in the process the world was destroyed by a great flood, where only Noah and his family survived. The cube was eventually scattered into 109 pieces around the world.

If a piece of Innocence has decided that the one using it has sinned or will not recognize the current user anymore as it's master, the Exorcist will become a fallen one. This is where the Innocence completely takes over an Exorcist's body and turns it into a monster, destroying everything surrounding it. There is no current cure for this and eventually the one afflicted will burn out and die in twenty four hours. Allen managed to stop Sumana fallen one, by removing the Innocence itself from him, but by then Suman's mind was already dead so he became a comatose, non-responsive person.

The power of Innocence is determined on how much an Exorcist is in synchronize with his weapon. The higher the synchronization rate, the better and powerful the weapon is. Also, Exorcists who have achieved certain sync rate with their Innocence can advance it to Level Two if necessary. This can allow them to access more powerful skills that cannot be used at basic invocation. Most exorcists have a synchro-rate of about eighty or more. Generals are the only ones that can bring their rates up to one hundred percent and beyond that. Those who have exceed 100% sync rate will be capable of becoming general. 100% sync rate is also called the critical point.

Types of Innocence : :

Equipment

The most common of the Innocence forms. This is where the Innocence is forged into a weapon and is used by the chosen Exorcist. Each equipment Innocence is forged differently to accommodate each Exorcist's unique Innocence abilities. Because the Innocence is not physically in contact with its Equipment-type Accommodator, the Exorcist cannot control the weapon as well as a Parasitic-type can. However, it is revealed in the anime that members of the Noah family can extract the Innocence from equipment-type weapons easily if given the chance.

Parasitic

A rare type of Innocence where the Innocence is born with the person and serves as a weapon. Though the cells that make up this type of Innocence are not part of the person, the body still recognizes it as it's own. Exorcists with parasite-type Innocence have higher synch rates with their Innocence. As the Innocence is a part of the Exorcist's body, it can heal the Exorcist if he or she is hit by the Akuma's Blood Bullet, destroying the virus before it spreads. Parasite-type Exorcists require high amounts of food and nutrients to sustain themselves, as they are technically eating for two. It has been revealed that Parasite-type Exorcists have a shorter lifespan than Equipment-types due to their Innocence taking a much larger toll on their body than an Equipment-type user's Innocence would. The people with the Parasite-type Innocence usually have the Innocence imbedded in their skin to form their anti-Akuma weapons.

Crystal

A powerful new type of Innocence where blood is the Innocence's medium. Currently. the order is recording all uses of this type and finding out what it can do as well as find out what would happen to the person using it. The Innocence takes a metallic form created from the Exorcist's blood. Although the Innocence can be controlled through emotions like a parasite-type, no part of the user's body is altered. Instead, the Innocence resides in the crystals made from the Exorcists blood forming an object such as a ring, or in Lenalee's case, a pair of bangles around her ankles. When the user activates the Innocence, the item transforms into a weapon of sorts, similar to equipment-type, but not actually part of the body like the parasite-type.

Lenalee's Innocence is the only crystal type in the series so far.
