Well, yes, no, and yes ...

there are seven "people" you can vote for, one of whom is actually two humans (Teddy and Tom) and there are eight options for voting (but one of those is "no preference")

So you can vote 1 to 8, but there are only seven nominees (hmmm, or so I think I'd argue ... but you're right there are eight humans involved)

A 'nominee' is 'a person who is nominated'. So there are 8 options on the ballot paper, and 8 nominees, but only 7 of the options include humans. Simple :-)

The Japanese Expeditionary Travel Scholarship (JETS) is a special fund created for the purpose of assisting a European science fiction fan, elected by popular vote of other European fans, to travel to and attend Nippon 2007, the 65th World Science Fiction Convention which will be held on 30 August to 3 September 2007 in Yokohama

Therefore only a single human being can be nominated ("a European science fiction fan") and you'd exclude Teddy and Tom for currently inhabiting two bodies! Since they are running as a conjoined pair (grin!) they are a single nominee

(ok, this has remained silly! I have absolutely no objection to Tom & Teddy being a single candidate (we're past the nominee stage now since we've had the names) even if the rules say it's for "a fan", I think it represents the best of anarchic SF fandom and friendship!)

Only three quid to dispatch you to the other side of the world? Bargain! Wait, they aren't paying for a return ticket are they?

Only joking, you've got my vote :)

Sorry for being thick but I cant put three of you in first place, can I?

No, you can't. But if you want to put someone else ahead of me, then (while I'll be very upset and cry a lot ) go ahead. It's better you vote than not, and if you want to put someone else first, then please put me second!

Only your first place vote will count initially, but if that person (say it's Jukka Halme) gets eliminated, then your second place vote (me!) gets promoted up to first place ... and then when I get eliminated your third place vote gets moved up to first place etc. until there's a clear winner.

Obviously I'd love to be your first place :-) but if you feel you must vote for someone else first, then please vote for me second!

Of course, thanks a lot!

You wouldn't qualify as you're not a European fan or an Intersection member (though the amount of fanfic you generate should qualify you as an active fan for other votes!)

Oh, and if you want to put in a pound symbol, you could try using the HTML version which is £ (£) which might work ...

... and are either European or were a member of Interaction, the 2005 Worldcon (which will include a fair number of my US friends, though the wording is ambiguous!), then you can vote for me!

I understand that the intent of the wording is that voters must be based in Europe. People based elsewhere who were Interaction members don't get to vote.

It's potentially abiguous (and potentially weird!) wording, as that interpretation means that they expect there must be at least one European person who has not been active in fandom since the 1st of January 2005 who was a member of Interaction (I think!), so being a member of a worldcon does not qualify as being active in fandom (as Interaction happened after the 1st of January 2005).

any science fiction fan based in Europe who has been active in fandom since 1 January 2005 and/or who was a member of Interaction

So it becomes
"any science fiction fan based in Europe, who either has been active in fandom since 1 January 2005, or who was a member of Interaction", is that right?

I can see that there are some fans that might not consider themselves "active in fandom" who had memberships for the 2005 worldcon so it does make sense to let them know they are still entitled to vote.

thanks for the clarification!

I think the point is that a Europe-based fan whose first activity was to attend Interaction is eligible to vote, while a a Europe-based fan whose first activity occurred at exactly the same time but didn't involve attending Interaction is not eligible.

But that doesn't make sense (I think) ... a fan who has been active in fandom since the 1st of January 2005 ... actually, that *is* ambiguous as well! Do they mean that the fannish activity has occurred at any point since 1st January 2005, or that they have to have been active in fandom on the 1st of January 2005 and continually since then? I read it to mean that if you have been fannishly active at any point since then (e.g. you attended Concussion as your first convention and have written fanzines, locs etc. since then) then you were eligible ... can you get clarification on that?
