Well, it's finally out of the bag ... I'm asking for your vote for a fan fund trip, to the Japanese Worldcon!

There are seven nominees on the ballot, all good and wonderful people, but as I'm one of them, I'm asking for your vote!

Voting forms are Here (PDF) and here (RTF/Word doc) or you can vote by paypal/email by copying the information from ( Read more... )

... and are either European or were a member of Interaction, the 2005 Worldcon (which will include a fair number of my US friends, though the wording is ambiguous!), then you can vote for me!

I understand that the intent of the wording is that voters must be based in Europe. People based elsewhere who were Interaction members don't get to vote.

It's potentially abiguous (and potentially weird!) wording, as that interpretation means that they expect there must be at least one European person who has not been active in fandom since the 1st of January 2005 who was a member of Interaction (I think!), so being a member of a worldcon does not qualify as being active in fandom (as Interaction happened after the 1st of January 2005).

any science fiction fan based in Europe who has been active in fandom since 1 January 2005 and/or who was a member of Interaction

So it becomes
"any science fiction fan based in Europe, who either has been active in fandom since 1 January 2005, or who was a member of Interaction", is that right?

I can see that there are some fans that might not consider themselves "active in fandom" who had memberships for the 2005 worldcon so it does make sense to let them know they are still entitled to vote.

thanks for the clarification!

I think the point is that a Europe-based fan whose first activity was to attend Interaction is eligible to vote, while a a Europe-based fan whose first activity occurred at exactly the same time but didn't involve attending Interaction is not eligible.

But that doesn't make sense (I think) ... a fan who has been active in fandom since the 1st of January 2005 ... actually, that *is* ambiguous as well! Do they mean that the fannish activity has occurred at any point since 1st January 2005, or that they have to have been active in fandom on the 1st of January 2005 and continually since then? I read it to mean that if you have been fannishly active at any point since then (e.g. you attended Concussion as your first convention and have written fanzines, locs etc. since then) then you were eligible ... can you get clarification on that?

e.g. if I had a rule saying
"you can't give blood if you've had a blood transfusion since the 1st of January 1990" then I'd mean that if I had a blood transfusion in 2006, I couldn't give blood.

Which would contradict the a Europe-based fan whose first activity occurred at exactly the same time but didn't involve attending Interaction is not eligible.
