Eugene disappears: Snafu attempts to not give a shit until Zelda visits and suggests they drink until they can't feel their toes, much less grief.

It's not that Snafu can't drink at home.  He can, and does, spend certain days loafing around the homestead just drunk enough to feel lazy and disinterested in going anywhere, chain smoking on the porch or dozing in his room with the cat, making up for lost time in a hole or just too high strung in the middle of the night to fall asleep.
