Time on the island was something of a relative concept, but the calendar said it was July the 4th today, and to Harry that meant only one thing: barbecue time. It'd been an awfully long time since he'd last set foot on American soil, and to him that made it all the more important to keep up with traditions from home. There were enough displaced ( Read more... )

Robin, while not American, could respect a day like this. Even if the real cause for celebrations was three days before. After all, good food, things that went boom usually, and it was kind of cute how Americans got so pent-up about one little day. She also turned up because there was a part of her telling herself that Lewis and Richard, wherever they were, would be super pissed off with her if she didn't show some appreciation.

So there she was, drink in hand.

"Excuse me, Ma'am," says Raylan touching the brim of his hat automatically as he slips past her, snagging a drink. Fourth of July's been a low key kinda thing for him since him and Winona split, but a barbeque? He can get behind that.

He flashes her a smile as he ducks past, looking for a drink.

Sometimes, god, Robin loved the island for the men that it offered. She didn't even need to talk to them sometimes when they were that good to look at. Of course, inevitably staring got her in trouble, so she put on her polite smile and stepped out of the way, offering out her drink. "Cheers," she saluted. "Nice hat," she appraised.

"Thankyou, Ma'am," says Raylan, still grinning easily. His wearing a plain grey t-shirt and jeans, hat nudged back on his head and Rachel's here somewhere and he's relaxed. Having a good time.

"Havin' a nice time?"

Jane did not quite understand the precise nature of the celebration beyond the fact that it seemed to exalt a nation that she knew very little about. As her family did not go over to the colonies, she was left knowing that she should only aid in some way, especially as the fete was hosted by Harry. She had baked a good variety of pies to bring with her, settling them upon the tables as guests arrived, keeping herself busy while Lydia nearby carried about one of Lloyd's rabbits, eager to show him off to the guests.

"Aren't you from the wrong side of the pond for July 4th?" Jack asked, grinning a little. He didn't figure Jane had any kind of opinion about America and, he wasn't really sure, but he thought maybe she was from before the whole Revolution anyway. He'd never really been much for history. "Doesn't matter though, glad to see you."

"Perhaps," she agreed warmly, giving Jack a pleasant smile. "But, I could not miss the day. Carwood would not be very pleased, I think, and since it is his day, I wish to be here for him and to help," she said with an assured nod of her head. "And a happy July four to you, Jack."

"Thanks," he said, grinning a little. "How's Carwood? Haven't seen him in a little while. Everything going good on the whole relationship front?"

Honestly, if it hadn't been Harry throwing this party, I'm not sure if I would've come. As it is, I still sit in the corner with a book in hand, scribbling in the margins from time to time and trying to keep out of the general thrust and din of people. Yes, my country deserves pride and nationalism. My country deserves all these things, but after fighting a war for my country, all I really want to do is be promised that things kept going on.

And us? Well, we're stuck on an island where we can't see how it turned out at all. And that's just not fair, in some absolutely selfish way.

"You look like the life and soul of the party, Web," says Brad, looking amused as he slides into a chair next to Webster, all long tan limbs and hair pushed back out of his face.

"Seriously. Is it because they're not having fireworks? I can understand that being difficult."

To his credit, Brad's face stays straight.

I glance up when I hear my name, almost shocked that there's anyone left who knows me. Honestly, at the rate of vanishing, I won't be surprised if suddenly I'm alone in a place full of strangers. "It's a day to celebrate our country, the one that we fought for, but we're nowhere near it to see what the sacrifices of what our friends and family have been paid for."

"You sound like a friend of mine," says Brad, shifting in his seat and sipping his beer, glancing across at Web. "And since it's not at all reasonable to tell you to stop thinking like a Mexican, I'm going to tell you to drink a beer and fucking relax."

Jack was actually pretty proud of being an American and, by extension, from Earth. He figured the military had a way of either making you really love your country or really hate it, depending on the wartime climate. This one was held up by where Lipton lived, and Jack was fine with hanging out with a bunch of vets. More than fine.

He had some juice thing...never really sure what stuff was made of on the island, and started mingling, figuring he could meet some people outside of the little circle he had.

Harry recognised Colonel O'Neill from the ITF's training sessions. Hadn't talked to him much - generally because they were too busy getting put through hell and high water by Captain Thrace - but there was no time like the present for fixing that up.

"Hey, Colonel!" he called, waving a pair of tongs in greeting. "Got some sausages on the grill just about ready. Interested?"

"Oh yeah," Jack said, waving at the guy. He knew him vaguely from ITF but, given Thrace ran them ragged, it was mostly just nod and get to work those days. "Missed barbecue. Used to do it myself back home."

"We used to have a big family picnic for July the fourth," Harry said, smiling as he remembered the chaos that usually resulted. "Sometimes there'd be a grill, but I've got so many uncles and cousins and things I'd never get anywhere near it. Think I'm doing pretty well for a first-timer, but hey. You be the judge."

He grabbed a bun from the pile on one of the tables, snatched up a sausage with the tongs and slapped it in.

"Here," he said, holding it out to Jack. "Condiments are just over there."

Part of being a kid at the Homestead meant helping out and Jacob really had no problem with that, especially if it was something thrown by Shari or Morgan. The barbeque didn't seem to be one of their things but he went anyway; July 4th had always been a fun holiday for him even if fireworks had been illegal on the res. Tribe officers never really cared and Bella's dad, well. Charlie had no real say out in La Push.

He still wanted to help if he could so he was moving around, trying to see if anything needed to be moved or set up or errands needed to be run.

Belle had drifted towards the group of people, but she wasn't exactly sure what was going on. When she saw Jacob, she gravitated towards him and plucked at his shirt from behind, leaning in and casting a wary look around. "What's going on?"

"Looks like a fourth of July picnic," he said, smiling broad. "Uh, America used to be ruled by the British, but we declared independence on July 4th and declared war. We celebrate it as our birthday or something."

He'd never been that good at history.

Belle hadn't really paid much mind to what was going on in Paris, let alone in the Americas, so the whole concept was a bit strange to her. "The only day we really ever talked about was July 14th," she admitted, and even in their small village, it hadn't been much. "So, it's basically like a party?"
