It was never too early to teach kid about the important things in life, and Devon was more than eager to do that. Despite Madeline being a couple of days shy of a month old, he'd already taken to telling her about sports -- and it seemed to calm her down, something that Devon found pride in, even though he knew she probably just liked hearing the ( Read more... )

"...because some people think that running about pointlessly is interesting-" William said, before he noticed that he and Olivia weren't alone on the field. She hadn't warned him, mostly because she'd been trying to get her hand in her mouth again, and missing.

He wasn't sure if that meant she wasn't listening, mostly because he was sometimes unsure when she was looking right at him.

"Um, hi," he said. He wondered if he should make Olivia wave. People did that sort of thing, didn't they?

"Hey," Devon replied, giving William a quick wave. He then caught one of Madeline's legs in his hand and waved that, too. "You showing Olivia around, too?"

"Well, I'm carrying her around," William said, "I don't know how much she's taken in, so I'm not sure about calling it showing. Er, Maladicta seemed like she needed a break."

The part where she'd told him so and then fallen asleep had been a bit of a tip-off.

"Same with Ellie," Devon said, feeling a little better knowing there was at least someone else in the same New Dad position he was. "Figured she could use a couple hours to herself."

"And it's only home to the best sport ever," Alice chirps as she spins around in a circle. It might be less like playing and more like dancing, but she has never seen why there should be a difference between the two.

Grinning from ear to ear as she tosses a ball up into the air and catches it, she nods emphatically. "That's good. Get 'em indoctrinated while they're young."

"Right on both counts," Devon replied, grinning from ear to ear. He liked Alice well enough, though he didn't really know her outside of the baseball games. "I think she likes hearing me talk about it."

"That's a good thing. I used to love playing baseball with my dad, so I'm pretty certain there are worse father-daughter activities."

Sure, Carlisle had been her father in the truest sense of the word, but Alice hadn't known any different. There is nothing wrong with taking the unconventional truth and making it easier to swallow.

"You get it," Devon said, looking pleased. Most people might think it was a little much, considering Madeline probably didn't understand any of it, but he couldn't really be faulted for being eager, now could he? "We'll work on football when she starts walking."

It seemed to Morrigan that everyone and their dog had offspring here. She was surprised to see that the man who looked so similar to one she thought incapable of taking care even of himself had one. Of course, it was entirely possible that the babe was someone else's temporarily in his care, but were this Alistair, she would not trust him even with...well, a dog. It was a wonder Duncan, the mabari, had not perished by now.

Morrigan had to remind herself that this was not Alistair. She had risked running into either by venturing so close to civilization, but the jungle did get lonely sometimes. Not that she would ever admit to feeling alone. She had been raised in such an environment, after all, with only her mother for company.

How glad she was the old crone was dead.

"What is baseball?" Morrigan asked from behind the two, staring at the flattened ground with the odd heaping of dirt. It was a very strange clearing.

Devon broke off from explaining what each base was when he heard Morrigan, looking a little surprised. "Oh, hey, Morrigan."

He shifted Madeline a little to get a better grip on her, then gestured around at the field. "Baseball's a sport. It looks a little more interesting when there are actually people playing it."

"A sport," Morrigan repeated. She was familiar with the concept, although she had never seen one being played - save, of course, for the chase of the hunt, whether with animals or with people. She did not see the point in other sports, save for physical exertion, which one could gain outside of frivolous activities in any case.

"Do people play often, on this island?" It would not surprise her. Many things seemed frivolous, here.

"Yeah, we have games every two months," Devon replied, looking a bit proud. The baseball league had been Buck's baby, but he was still proud of it, regardless. "But everyone plays whenever they want, or practice with their teams."

Alistair had been taking a walk himself, Duncan following along beside him. He'd taken notice of the area before, if only because it had certainly been prepared for something, but he didn't give it much thought until he came across Devon and...his baby. It was strange seeing someone with his face holding a baby.

"Greetings," he said, unconsciously keeping his voice low. Babies didn't like loud noises, did they? He didn't think so. He didn't usually like loud noises either, because things that wanted him dead usually followed. "I hope I'm not interrupting."

"Not one bit," Devon replied, having finished up a quick explanation about bases. He wondered if there would be any confusion on Madeline's part if she got a good look at them together. "Hey, Alistair. I'm just showing Madeline around."

"It would seem she knows more than me, then," he said, mouth hitching up into slightly self-deprecating grin. "You said this was a...baseball field?"

He knew what a field was, at least. It was the little things that made him feel better about not knowing just about everything here.

"Baseball, that's right." Sometimes it was a little hard to remember Alistair came from a different world, even with the accent. "It's a sport we play on Earth. You basically hit a ball with a bat and run around the field to score."

In a nutshell.
