It was never too early to teach kid about the important things in life, and Devon was more than eager to do that. Despite Madeline being a couple of days shy of a month old, he'd already taken to telling her about sports -- and it seemed to calm her down, something that Devon found pride in, even though he knew she probably just liked hearing the ( Read more... )

Alistair had been taking a walk himself, Duncan following along beside him. He'd taken notice of the area before, if only because it had certainly been prepared for something, but he didn't give it much thought until he came across Devon and...his baby. It was strange seeing someone with his face holding a baby.

"Greetings," he said, unconsciously keeping his voice low. Babies didn't like loud noises, did they? He didn't think so. He didn't usually like loud noises either, because things that wanted him dead usually followed. "I hope I'm not interrupting."

"Not one bit," Devon replied, having finished up a quick explanation about bases. He wondered if there would be any confusion on Madeline's part if she got a good look at them together. "Hey, Alistair. I'm just showing Madeline around."

"It would seem she knows more than me, then," he said, mouth hitching up into slightly self-deprecating grin. "You said this was a...baseball field?"

He knew what a field was, at least. It was the little things that made him feel better about not knowing just about everything here.

"Baseball, that's right." Sometimes it was a little hard to remember Alistair came from a different world, even with the accent. "It's a sport we play on Earth. You basically hit a ball with a bat and run around the field to score."

In a nutshell.

"Ah, right. Interesting," he said, eyebrows furrowed. He didn't know what a bat was, either, but he decided not to ask. He got the idea. At least, he thought he did. "Is that your daughter? I didn't know you had one."

Not that they met often. Though, now that he thought about it, the baby might just be the reason why.

"This is my daughter," Devon confirmed, grinning from ear to ear as he shifted so Alistair could get a better look at her. "She's only a couple weeks old, so most of my time's spent with her and my wife."

That made sense. The girl was pretty tiny. Then again, most babies were, in his experience. Which admittedly wasn't much, for obvious reasons.

"She's cute," he offered, which both was an automatic response as well as true. That he could see features of Devon in her was a little disconcerting since they technically were hit own features as well. "I'm sure she'll be very impressed with this game when she's older. Are you expecting to teach her it?"

"When she's old enough to throw a ball and run on her own, yeah," Devon nodded. He was already looking forward to that day, as far off as it was. Hell, he still couldn't believe nearly a month had passed already. "Learning to walk should probably come first."

"And how to use her arms," he said with a hint of amusement in his voice as he saw her wave one around. On a whim, he stuck a finger closer to her and was surprised to see how fast she latched onto it. A smile crossed his face. "Well now, you've got a grip there, don't you? Better than mine, I think."

Madeline didn't look confused or fussy when she got a grip on Alistair's hand, which Devon took as a good sign. She probably thought two guys who looked like dad were better than one.

"She does," he said, looking on proudly. "This is Alistair, Maddie."

Alistair was glad she didn't start fussing, either. He would've felt guilty if he'd gone and upset her. "I know I look like your dad, but you'll figure out the differences pretty quickly, I promise."

He could just imagine one day coming across her when she was older and her mistaking him for Devon. Duncan was doing a good job not getting confused, at least, so he hoped that would keep up.

"I think she likes you already," Devon commented. Even though she didn't seem to do anything out of the ordinary, Devon tended to take her calmly accepting someone as a sign of approval. "Though that just might be by default, or something."
