Seven cats and two dogs was too much for one snowed in house. When they could all be outside most of the time, Jack had no problem with it, but with them all inside, it was driving him crazy. Dulcita's litter was old enough now to leave their mother. He'd already promised to give a couple away, but that still left him with more kittens than he ( Read more... )

They both wear velvet trimmed in fur, coats to be discarded now that they're in the warmth. Jenny pauses for a moment, the hood pushed back from her ruffled dark hair as she crouches to unbutton Ygraine's coat. The little girl notices the kittens before her Mother does and reaches for them. Jenny catches hold of her hand.

"Do not touch," she cautions. "Animals are almost as wild as children, lady Yig."

The kitten had no regard for Jenny's words and craned its neck before sneaking forward to mark Ygraine's ankles as its own. Winding around the little girl, the kitten mewed, demanding more attention.

"It isn't wild," Jack assured her with a smile. "They're all tame as can be...well, except that one over there. He's too much like his father."

Ygraine bends down and pets the little head with a gentle hand, used to horses and being soft. Jenny arches an eyebrow.

"Baby animals and baby humans are wild in the same way, heart," she says, one eyebrow twitching. "They will never quite be owned."

"Now that is the truth. I think Dulcita owns me more than I own her," Jack chuckled. He watched as the kitten lifted against the gentle touch and mewed for more, resting a tiny paw on the girls leg to sniff at her. There was never anyone so small in Jack's house, so Ygraine was something completely new to investigate.

"Havin' some trouble?" I ask, standing in the doorway, half out of my coat and a smirk on my face.

I can't really decide if it's disturbing how cute they are, even with Harkness standing there in the middle of it all.

"I never really got the whole 'harder than herding cats' thing until I had to try to do it," Jack replied, lunging for another kitten making its way toward the fire place. "Neil, would you grab that one that's trying to climb the shelves?"

He really wished they'd have just stayed in the box, but that was really too much to ask.

Stifling a laugh, I cross the room, dropping my coat onto the sofa on my way past, and peel the tiny gray fluffball off the bookcase. It lets out a desperate mewl, claws sinking into my sweater and holding on for dear life.

"I probably don't wanna even know, but what the hell are you doin', man?"

"Trying to get rid of them," he sighed, wrangling two into the box again...for all the good it did. "They're old enough and with the snow, they're all in the house. I can't keep up with all of them and the dogs."

Then he grinned.

"That one likes you. You want it?"

For his part, Scotty can't wait to get his hands on one of those kittens. While he maybe would prefer to have a dog, he couldn't pass up the opportunity to take one of the kittens off Jack's hands, and anyway, they're just too adorable to turn down. He'd been meaning to drop by Jack's hut -- well, house now -- and ask if the kittens were almost ready to leave home, but he hadn't gotten around to it yet. Walking into the Compound, he sees he won't have to bother, since Jack and the kittens were already camped out on the floor.

Grinning, he joins Jack, settling himself down and glancing around at the little furry things crawling all over the place. "Your entourage keeps growing, Jack."

Jack snorted and shook his head. "I'm hoping to shrink it by the end of the day. You want one? Tell me you want one," he said, holding up an adorable little ball of fluff and offering it to Scotty. "You know you want it."

"I've been scheming to get my hands on one of these kittens for a while now," he tells Jack as he accepts the offered kitten. It's wriggly and warm and furry in his hands and Scotty feels like a four year old girl because of how giddy it makes him. "You mean you don't have enough animals living in your house? You want to give away these adorable little things?"

"Oh, God," he groans. "I'm amazed that I can take care of myself, some days. Since it snowed, it seems like we're over run. I can't wait to have them adopted." And with the look on Scotty's face, he can tell that's one down.

"This is why we can never have kids," Logan tutted, scooping up one of the balls of fluff before it could run out the door.

Call him crazy, but he was oddly attached to the little bastards, and he was kind of sad to see them all go. Flopping down on the couch, he smiled as the smallest of the litter squirmed in his hand and swiped at his nose with tiny claws.

"I like this one," he said. "It's a fighter."

"It scratches me more that you do," Jack pointed out. "We seriously cant keep them all. They're driving me out of my mind."

He had to admit, though, Logan looked damned cute holding the little ball of fur.

Logan lifted the kitten high enough to see if it was a boy or a girl and then laughed as he leaned forward and held it out near Jack.

The cat hissed, a pathetic little noise that was anything but fierce, and the younger man laughed as he flopped back down and let the animal settle in on his chest.

"That's why he's my favorite."

"Why am I not surprised that you like the hellion of the bunch?" Jack laughed. "You really want to keep him? Two dogs, two cats...well have a zoo before long."

While some days, coming down to the grey, dreary compound felt like a chore, these days Dale came almost merrily, enjoying the festive architecture and atmosphere.

"Whoa, hey there," he said, pausing his coffee halfway to his mouth as a kitten assaulted his ankle. Though it was less "assaulted" than "batted at" if he was being honest. "Looks like you've got a real handful there, Jack."

"Less of a handful than when I came in. I've given away a few," he chuckled. "I don't suppose I could get you to take one? Ozzy needs a friend." Somehow he thought Ozzy might think the kitten was more of a snack, but these were adept at escaping Linus, Sugar, and Player. They'd be fine with Joe's dog.

"We should probably let Ozzy decide that for herself," said Dale, but the kitten did seem to have taken a liking to him - or to his festive socks, at the very least - and the truth was that Dale had often thought he could use a friend in the Council office, since the hedgehog was just not really a lap sort of a pet. "Have you named them?"

captainjack December 10 2009, 23:11:20 UTC
"Nope. You name them and you just get attached. I knew from the night Dulcita had them that I wasn't going to keep them," Jack explained. He watched the little one check out Dale's socks and wind itself around his ankles, purring loudly enough to be heard across the room.

"I think you just made a friend. I'm not sure Ozzy gets a say in it," he chuckled.
