"What are you going to call it?" he asked. "I'm not even sure if it's a boy or a girl."

By that he of course means that he wants to spoil her to no end.
"This one is," he starts, catching hold of her and turning her over to check, "a girl. Which is good because I wanted a girl, and I already have a name. Vixen, in honor of the season." On her back in his hands, Vixen wriggles her paws and squirms, trying to get upright again. Scotty lets her go, and she climbs back up Scotty's thigh, settling down on his knee.
"Did you know all of Santa's reindeer are girls?" he asks, watching the kitten switch her tail. "Only girl reindeer have antlers in the winter."

"I did not, in fact, know that," he chuckled. "That's an interesting bit of trivia. How often do you get to tell people that?"

"Is it a book for kids?" he asked. He'd certainly never read it during the war, and it wasn't a staple of any sort on Boeshane or in the Time Agency. Of course, little things like that tended to slip throught the cracks of education. He had some slang, and yet was missing large gaps of things like...television. That simply hadn't been his assigned era.

"It is... It's a poem that they made into a story... I probably have parts of it memorized by now; you hear it everywhere during Christmas..." Vixen is squirming too much, so he leans down to set her on the floor; while he's down there, he spots the book he's looking for, sticking out between some copies of Rudolph and Frosty in book form. "Here it is," he grins, pulling the book free and joining Jack on the floor again.

"Are you gonna read me a story, Scotty?" he asked, half teasing and half flirting, though he truly didn't mean to. He simply couldn't help it.
